Can I ask, what is the problem with using a soft link in a new chain ? considering the final drive chain is fitted with a soft link.
If your final drive chain link comes off, yes, it can be dangerous to people behind you and your own legs. If a soft link cam chain link gives way, it totally wrecks the inside of the engine and most of the components in it. The engine could also seize immediately and could cause a huge problem to the riders life expectancy. People do use soft link but only if they are not stripping the bottom end of the engine.

Ordinarily the rattle is the gearbox itself,  not a fault as such, but disconnects the gearbox when you pull the clutch lever to stop it driving. Gearbox is largely not rotating at that point and noise lessens.

Rattle is made ultimately by uneven running causing the gearbox to clatter a bit.

Route to refinement is getting carbs well setup to give you very even power pulses,  and hence reduce any clattering.

Sounds like clutch is reasonably ok as it is,  you'll be able to check further when riding to see if it doesn't slip under load.
Yes Nigel, there is that as well. It will do no harm changing clutch plates but may not reduce the noise by much, if at all.

Sounds like the usual clutch basket rattle to me. It can be sorted by changing the cush rubbers, if you can find anyone manufacturing them, which I doubt. Mine does the same, as long as the rattle goes when you increase the revs, don't worry about it, its not doing any harm.

Is this the same green bike going for auction...
Still hopefully with that reserve..

Looks like it Jason. If that sells for the guide price, then there are a lot of us forum members who are sitting on absolute gold mines........😀😀😀 If that sells for anything like the reserve, I feel very, very sorry for the buyer.

Ah, ok. Yes, that sounds a good idea. That part looks very nice but bloody expensive 😱😱😱

Post a photo of what you have fitted and we may be able to help......we, as in forum members 😀😀😀

Haha, in the days of the weekly little brown envelope with all the deductions and Net take home pay written on the front by the wages clerk 🤣🤣I though I was very important when I worked somewhere where that actually put the pay slip IN the envelope with the cash 🤣🤣🤣

I love the overall shape of it but I just cant get my head around that huge hole in the middle where all the usual gubbins live behind the side panels. I suppose I could carry my handbag there but....that's really not my style 🤣🤣🤣

Yes your price is good for heavy duty, I am weighing up my options

OK Pete, just shout if I can be of help. Don't forget these are endless ones, so a complete engine strip needed (but you know that 🙄🙄🙄) I don't sell any soft link chains at all.

Yes a couple of sellers do the fts did chain for just under £25 incl free postage

Ah, OK. The last standard DID endless I saw for sale was a good 18 months ago and that was in a box that had been opened and the chain wasn't even wrapped in the DID oil paper 🤣🤣🤣. If you are interested but you're probably not due to price and needing 3 , but I sell the upgraded 219 FTH DID chains for £45 inc post. I'm not worried if anyone thinks that's expensive or cheap, I sell too many of them to not worry about it, including to a Honda dealer which is damned strange. 😀😀😀

Is a standard did cam chain ok, was original honda chain heavy duty, I need to buy 3 of them and it makes huge difference to price

Have you found any of the non heavy duty ones for sale Pete and how much are they out of interest. We have been selling the DID 219 FTH which are the heavy duty ones, for about 3 years now and fit them to all the engine rebuilds also. I haven't seen a 'normal ' one for about 3 years advertised anywhere as DID stopped manufacturing them and now do the heavy duty ones as the standard replacement. Edit...i am talking endless by the way, not soft link.

You lot have got fantastic memories. The only thing I can remember from the late 70's is being able to fill my bikes with fuel for about £1.75 which got me to work and back for a week as a Student Nurse. The rest if my life from then to last week is a complete blank 🙄🙄🙄🙄
Edit....just remembered Norwich Union Riders policy..£300 in 1980
