Title: Grab handles
Post by: Nimmy9 on January 01, 2013, 04:21:29 PM
Hi all.
Has anyone got a pair of grab handles for a 77 bike they want to sell on?

As standard they only came with only the left hand one. The 400 ones are hard to find but the CB750 SOHC ones have the same length but have a different shape. Can post picture of difference if you like.

I never realised this and always thought I had one missing  :-\

Of course now you say that its obvious - its only to help you get the thing up on to the centre stand - doh! Anyway, DSS has them (but a bit pricey)

Difference between CB400F and CB750 (the ones DSS are selling as replacements)

CB400F

CB750

CB400F

CB750

Does anyone have an idea what this is off, It came with a job and is probably Honda as it has the same hole space as the other Honda ones. It has been re-plated and needs a home.

Looking at fiches the 500/550 have a U shaped grab rail that goes around the rear of the seat ?.

My 500s are 72 models and came with a left hand grab handle mounted the same as the ones in your other photos.

I think the 550s had the "grab rail" as they had more sculpted seats.

I bought my grab handles from DSS about 10 years ago.

Thanks Steve,
Looked on DSS and he has the CB750 handle listed as correct for the CB500. The handle I have is much deeper, the CB750 one is 35mm high from bottom of rear mounting hole to top of front mounting hole, the unidentified handle is 55mm.

Quite a thread going. Paul I have some pictures of a production 400/4 of 1977 which I am using as a template for my renovation.  My bike is exactly like the pictures except for grab handles - which are shown on both sides!  I am happy to get my hands on these (originals) even if they need refurbishing and re-chroming.  Cheers all. Paul

So the 400F one has a twist in it and the 750 one is straight....
Nimmy asked first so its his dibs but I'll have one if its in good nick and going spare. Don't mind if its the 750 one.

Cheers
Tom

The other difference between the CB750F handle and the 400F one is the diameter of the tube. The CB750f ones are 16mm and the 400f ones 14mm. I made replica ones some years ago in 14mm tube, must have made a 100 or so and they ended up all over the world! Still have the tooling I used to make them but when I could no longer get them plated locally it wasn't worth the effort. Found a few in a dusty box, they are not exactly the same as original but have the slight upwards angle where the end of the handle bolts to the rear guard securing bolt. Better than a CB750F handle and a whole lot better than no handle! They are chrome plated to a very good standard, probably better than could be achieved re-plating a rusty original. They are also made of a thicker wall tube.

I made a handle for the other side, rather handy for lifting the back end around with too many bikes in the garage and somewhere to hook the other end of a cargo net.

PM me if a replica handle would surfice.
