the bike is an M plate CB500-4,after 40yrs and 55,000 miles the spokes and rims are looking scruffy,

 so I thought a strip down,paint the hubs in aluminium and have stainless spokes,chrome plated brass nipples,and stainless rims,

lo maintenance,easy clean,no corrosion,

several suppliers do these,

What do you think?
any experience of suppliers to AVOID ?


will they know how many holes in the rim ??

Cant help you there John Have always used a skilled wheel builder not expensive reliable and in my opinion bloody good new rims new spokes the dogs.Once for a 400/4 and a 750/4

If you want low,low maintenance go for chrome hubs, rims and spokes. Haven't seen anyone around for years that does chrome spokes. Had a Honda C77 with that wheel set up (no polishing). Not sure where you are located but, can recommend C Wylde & son in Leeds. Always done me a good deal on wheelbuilding products.

 I have sent e-mail to Wyldes,hopefully they can help,although the web site says the wheel building is suspended !!

as I just want parts,maybe I will be ok

Ask to speak to Bob at C J Wylde. Top bloke. They also do a fuel tank de-rust / lining service. Not the cheapest but they treat it like their own and are superb to deal with.

so far,  Wyldes are away,guess to the IOM,


and Central quoted for 2 rims,2 setof spokes,all stainless and carriage  £348,

my local engineer quoted between £80-100 to rebuild 2 wheels,

Have a go, take your time and you'll be amazed at the results. Check the rims are still ok to use and won't collapse from rust when you start riding.

Read up on how to lace them and you'll have it going in no time. Look for the marks on the hubs and they'll tell you where they go.
You'll have the pleasure of doing it yourself, plus you'll save a huge amount of money.
