Title: Fitting Taper Rollers to K3
Post by: PennoK3 on March 30, 2020, 04:13:45 PM
Afternoon Guys, well lockdown has finally accelerated the rebuild of my K3.  I have installed a set of Pyramid Parts Taper Rollers, the lower one I have put the thick shim, the dust seal and the bearing in that order.   The race is fully seated in the headstock but when offered up the bottom yoke is held so far off that the steering stops don't contact.   Any tips or experience?

You need to select proper washer to have the same bottom bearing height than oem one. I'll search for some photo, I should have it

Did not find my photos quickly, but here are from other member of us sohc forum: http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php/topic,1516.msg1829292.html#msg1829292
See 2nd pic, comparing new taper bearing (on the left) with OEM one. height difference must be compensated by washer under lower bearing. And don't forget seal!

My post, showing kit from AllBalls I used: http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php/topic,1516.msg1984353.html#msg1984353 there is also pic to show how it should be assembled
hope it helps

Thanks for that.   I think I will dis-assemble and re-assemble without the washer as there was no washer on the original ball races

Normally taper one is lower than OEM, so I doubt you don't need washer

Simly put complete OEM bearing with balls in comparison with complete taper one and difference have to be compensated by washer

Maybe washer you have in the kit is too thick. I had I think 2 washers in the kit and I used thinner

Problem is original balls are long gone so nothing for comparison.

Here we are, I found them, measured for reference of anyone interested. These comes from my 750K7 but my 550K1 has the same, so I assume other sohc too (I advice to verify via spare parts catalogue)
Hope it helps (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200401/0c0561fe77bc83fe8a2f3e3b2a437571.jpg)

Many thanks Erny.   I think I have solved it now.   Took of the washer/spacer from the bottom bearing, may have had the oil seals mixed up as I had the large one on the bottom but replaced it with the smaller one which now sits nicely inside the headstock.   Larger seal covers the top and all has fastened up nicely.   Many thanks for your help.
