Title: I wondered what the dot was on a japanese screwhead......
Post by: Andrew-S on October 25, 2019, 06:00:08 PM: Its news to me, but may not be for many of you - apparently it identifies a JIS (Japanese Industry Standard) screwhead and needs a JIS screwdriver, not Phillips head.....here's why:

Post by: Trigger on October 25, 2019, 09:55:29 PM: What a load of yank waffle. I stock thousands of JIS screws and some have a dot and some don't.
I never use a JIS screwdriver and only own a couple of T bar ones. I mainly use PH3,PH2 and just grind the tip off, a lot cheaper and have only failed to get a JIS screw out when someone has had a go before me ;)

This is all I have ever used

Post by: cooleronthecoast on October 26, 2019, 11:44:11 AM: I bought a set of JIS screwdrivers last year and use them all the time now on my bike. They aren't any dearer to buy than a Philips or crosshead driver, I'd recommend anyone with a Jap bike to get some.

Post by: Trigger on October 26, 2019, 12:13:39 PM: You must of found a cheap supplier of JIS screwdrivers :o I pay about £3 for ten PH3 bits, which can be used in a screwdriver attachment, in a socket to torque to spec. How do you torque a JIS screw with a screwdriver ?

That means you need a JIS bit to go in a torque driver and a JIS screwdriver will never fit in a torque driver :o

Post by: AshimotoK0 on October 26, 2019, 02:19:17 PM: My experience of JIS screwdrivers is they are usually made by Vessel in Japan and bl**dy expensive but don't have the tendancy to 'cam-out' like Philips. The Vessel Megadora version have little grip protrusions ... not so sure how much better that is than the standard Vessel ones and my old ones have square shafts you can put a spanner on while Megadora ones are round with a less useful knurled section on them.

I have a set of Vessel ones I got for my 21st birthday and still going strong .. with square shafts....see picture of same type attached.

Having said all this I have had cross head bits from cheopo sets which have broken off rather than cam-out so who knows what the profile of those are.

And Honda issued to their machanics a torque screwdriver.
My friend & former Bill Head mechanic still has one of these in his tool box.

Post by: Trigger on October 26, 2019, 10:28:10 PM: Can't remember Honda ever giving me a Honda torque driver, have a old Britool one in a tool box but, that will not remove a JIS screw from any SOHC oil pumps ;)

i can recall going to the local motorcycle shop and asking them for the use of a impact driver on the case screws of jap bikes because they was so tight ? as trigger said i think? they did need a good belt to undo ;)

For many years I've used an impact driver to free off tight cross head screws but a JIS driver to refit them. As I'm not usually being bothered about keeping bikes totally original I prefer to use allen (socket) headed screws anyway.
