Cheers.

The 750 has no lift of throttles when choke is used as it just drops guillotine type plates down into venturi on airbox side.

Throttle modulation is entirely on twist grip and rider control, usually you've got to juggle just rich enough to run with choke lever against how much you hold slides open until warm enough to run off choke. Choke lever down and flat against the carb body for fully open, no enrichment.

If you need someone else to come round and scratch heads in unison  :) let me know as I'm not far and often going past near you.

Nigel.

Ok, so the plugs on 2,3 & 4 were fouled and no spark, but also the plug gap on No4 had increased to about 35 thou, strange?

All plugs cleaned and checked/regapped at 25 thou and it fired on all four pots, back-fired a few times then suddenly shot from 1000 to 4,000 rpm and stayed there so switched it off. Then on few restarts it fired up and stayed at 4,000.

I'm now thinking the carb bank will have to come off again...... :-\

Nigel,
I may end up taking you up on your offer of a head scratching session in unison whenever is convenient for you and when you're nearby.

Cheers,
Andrew

Hi Nigel,

I'm going to have another look over the weekend, but failing that a head scratching session in unison would be most welcomed, thank you. :)

Andrew

Yesterday I fired the old girl up after readjusting the throttle linkages and idle stop both static and whilst running and it was only running on 2 cylinders, sometimes just one. ??? I've Just came back in from the garage having checked there is a spark at the points, at all four leads, that fuel getting to 2, 3 & 4 and the valves are opening and closing, and it's a 'yes' to all those.

That's all the time I have for it for today, so tomorrow I will pull the plugs and see if their fouled and go for there. Thing is, it was running fine and sounding great first and last time I fired it up back in Jan 19, but it wouldn't idle hence the carb strip and rebuild:

Thanks Ted, I shared your frustration in thinking 'on' was 'off' and 'off' was 'on'...... :o

CB750 / K1 start-up after carb rebuild, teething problems.....
« on: September 15, 2021, 09:20:50 PM »
Well, the K1 started up first prod after the carb rebuild, however when the choke leaver is down (fully open) then raised slightly it revs to about 3,000 rpm and when it's up (fully closed) it cuts out.  I've checked the opening throttle cable and it doesn't appear too tight and the return cable is doing it's job. It will idle at 1,000 rpm at a little before the lever is fully up. I haven't adjusted the idle thumb screw yet so will look at all the linkages and idle setting tomorrow

In the meantime, any thoughts or suggestions gratefully received.

Welcome from me too, lots of friendly knowledgeable folk on here willing to share their experiences and frustrations. Enjoy the 400/4.

Would be interested to learn the comparison between your 77 Z1000 (A1) and the Z900RS, maybe chalk and cheese?

Cheers, Andrew

Ted, Oddjob

Thanks for your tips. I got bored counting to a million so went back out with a cuppa and with some leverage on the airbox brackets using a long screwdriver, 'delicate' force and Saxon language managed to get the captive nut lined up but it was very clear that I needed 3 hands, but made do with my knee, elbow and chin - the rubbers were fiddley but it's all now fitted up. I was going start the old girl but I'll leave that until tomorrow.......

Cheers, Andrew

CB750 / Trying to refit the K1's airbox and boots!!
« on: September 13, 2021, 02:06:45 PM »
Ok, so I thought I'd done the more fiddly job of refitting the carbs back onto the K1 yesterday, so thought refitting the airbox would be a breeze, wrong!!  I've been trying to refit it for the last few hours, the boots are correctly orientated but the thing just won't fit even after using silicon lube on the boots. Then, when I got somewhere close the captive nut on the airbox bracket wouldn't line up by about 6mm and wont budge.  I'm currently counting to a million!

What's the trick, or have I got the sequence wrong; I just thought that as I had removed it first then it made sense to refit it last???

Although I did notice the new DS inlet rubbers were a little longer than originals that came off it, has anyone else had this problem with them?

Well, the carbs have been stripped and were pretty clean inside so bodies were cleaned by hand as I wanted to keep the original finish, then reassembled using the Keyster service kit with 40/110 jets (35/120 were removed) by Mark at MK Classics in Woodley. I've just refitted them to the K1 with new intake rubbers, which were about 8mm longer than the originals that came off (??). If I get time I'll refit the airbox etc tomorrow and hopefully fire the old girl up off a remote tank.

Cheers, Andrew

Thanks Dave, got a bit of a numb hand at times as the Z900 has a high frequency vibration at around 4500 revs but soon shook it off and thoroughly enjoyed the ride.

Possibly not of interest, but I had a great ride over to Burford in the Cotswolds during the week in the sun and the first ride of such distance since my stoke in June 2019, a round trip of 150 miles to meet up with the brother of Phil Churchett who owned my 76 Z900 for 28 years and sadly lost his battle with MND in 2010, Phil was a highly respected founding member and stalwart of the Z1 Owners Club. Jon rides a Z900 RS Cafe and I must admit it looks rather 'I want one'ish. It was great to finally meet Jon as we've been trying to get-together for a while now to chat about Phil and his ownership of his Zed9.

I do like the XRs and the XR600R would do nicely.  8)

I'm pretty sure BMW did something similar in the 80s?

Is this the one Andrew?

Yep, that's the one Phil! I see it was available from 2000 according to Wiki, but pretty sure I saw one a bike show in the 80's, maybe it was a concept?
