Misc / Open / Re: My summary of 2020
« on: December 28, 2020, 09:06:51 AM »
Wow, makes my year seem pretty normal. Had 4 weeks off for the 1st lockdown and worked ever since (3 days a week). Used my MG quite a bit for work as well as the Honda and the Suzuki.

We even managed a couple of weeks away in the caravan during August. Me , the Mrs and the dogs. Very quiet, but away and out.

Wife retired, then got another job, but only 2 days a week.

Bought an interesting old BSA hybrid, but not been out on it yet as this was only a few weks ago.

Like all, we miss being able to go out, not that we always want to go out, but being able to (if that makes sense)

Christmas was quiet as my daughter (who works with my wife in school) could not come round and my son, who is at uni in London had notification that he could come home decided to get a covid test along with his housemates. He and a friend were negatives but the third lad (a teacher) was positive

. They are all being retested tomorrow, so may see my son over new year.

Still, if that all I have to complain about, I am furtunate.

There are a lot of lonely folk about in these times. who I feel sorry for. I have a few friends that live alone and I know they are getting really fed up, but lucily not to the point of depression.

Hopefully, the vaccines that are coming through will be administered in the coming months and things will get back to some sort of normality.

Happy and healthy new year to all

I have 2 18v Milaukee impacts, one 3/8 and one 1/2 drive. Use both at work. The 3/8 is brilliant. 4 preset speeds (loads of 40, 100, 220 and 284 nm) and you can adjust these values with a phone app. Both came with 2 batteries and 3 year warranties
Use the 3/8 for just about everything as it is small enough to get into tight spaces. Was not cheap, but I do use it a lot and claimed back some tax.
The 1/2 drive kicks out 130 and 950 nm. Not much says no to it.
Bought them both from FFX fixings online

Think its important to get a Li ion battery (assume the older types are still sold) as it reduces the memory effects.

Buy an impact, you will not regret it.

Some of the Aldi/Lidl tools are pretty good and also come with good warranties. Have an 18v drill that is mainly used to clean wheel rims with a wire brush. Brilliant and came with 2 batteries.

Interesting views, I have tested many classic cars and bikes over the years. Most are fine and the owners only have them tested to have a piece of paper saying they are roadworthy.
Just peace of mine in case somethimng happens.
One classic car specialist that I know has been asked countless times if he could do some sort of road worthyness examination of these vehicles and produce something to say that the vehicle in question was ok. His comment was that a mot would be much cheaper and its an official document.
Again I have had a few cases of careful owners with lots of experience fail on something that they have missed.
Personally, I have my 3 bikes and the car tested annually as do my friends with classic bikes or cars.

I have seen some pretty bad examples of classics, look great untill you start to look closely.

At the end of the day, its your call, but have you missed something?? :-\ ??? ::) ;D

CB350/400 / Re: Wheel Building
« on: October 21, 2020, 08:39:09 AM »
From memory, Honda wheels are easier to build as the inner hubs are equal width, unlike sfound the nearestome Brit bikes with a brake drum on one side only. As above, take pictures and measure offset from the flat face of the hub  and the rim. It helps that there will be witness marks on the hub from the original spokes, so that is a big clue.
When I did mine, I used a magic marker to indicate the offset of the rim. I marked in 0.2 mm steps. Gives a good guide to which way the wheel needs adjusting.
Think the spokes work in every 4th rim hole from the hub, once you get the orientation of the dimple to hub sorted.

Used them years ago. Good job done, think they now have a long turn around time.

Found a small company in Stevenage, (MD Platers). Used a few times for various parts. They do not specialise in bikes but it is run by a couple of bikers.

They do industrial stuff, but will do a basket of bits for a reasonable price (usually cash). I have only had bright zinc done, but the parts came out fine.

All depends on what you want done I guess

Don't think there is a cure, just brake later and harder  ::).
Pretty sure fitting of cast iron discs was the cure to wet weather breaking in the day. OE equipment tended to be stainless to prevent corrosion, but had the dreaded wet brake delay in the wet

As above, definately a speed warning device. I worked on a japanese import several years ago and it had the lamp. Research at that time identified the beast.

Only ever had 2 Suzukis. One was a T350 Rebel, that I bought new in 72. The other is a T350 Rebel that was finished late last summer. Same colours etc. Love it.

Umpteen Hondas, BSA's and Triumphs. One Kawasaki (78 Z1000 A2). A few Yamahas, but these just seemed to pass through my hands but never got used.

Most were good fun, even the Brits. Still have a soft spot for the Bonnie and Commando that I had.

Interesting stuff. Did not know there was so many little changes. Don't uppose there is an English translation?

Anyone know the diameter of the K0 front reflectors?
