Title: Don't see many of these UK ones about
Post by: Trigger on March 11, 2018, 08:02:52 PM
Nice Honda picture, can't make out the date on the tax disc. Looks like it was taken just off Trafalgar Square, just at the entrance to the Cockspur Street me thinks  ;)

Very smart, never thought of that :D So, if it was taxed in March 72, the K2 was not released here until the August 1972 .

You could still buy six months road tax for a big bike back the, so they could have bought 6 months in Aug 72!

Found someone on fleabay selling brochure. What I find strange is, the bike on the front is K1 but, the one on the back is K2. Brochure printed 1972 >>>  https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Honda-CB750-Four-K1-K2-Original-Honda-motorcycle-Brochure-1972-RARE-Single-page/372245793467?hash=item56ab940abb:g:tdoAAOSwYKNapaoc

Might just be for the photo.

A few years back Classic Bike ran a piece on Eamon’s blue K1(?) and the photographer took out the tax disc and replaced it with a period item.

He reminded Eamon to put the real one back in before he rode home!

Seen that before Graham .. the grumpy bloke on the 'On all Fours' stand at show's has it on his stand plus a picture of Eamon's bike which was in fact a straight  'CB750'  Steve  .. the 1st CB750 to be officially imported into the UK according to the Parts Books. What puzzles me is that Honda chose to photograph the Gold K? in the rain? James will know the answer he's a marketing guy !!

They may have purposely done the shoot in the rain, due to the reflection of available light and not wanting to use a flash, film cameras often show flash photos of shiny chrome parts as "flaring" which ruins the shot. If you look at 70's or 80's T.V. movies, you will notice that the roads are often wet, sprayed by the film makers for the same reason. As film speeds/sensitivity became better, with higher speeds it became less necessary, and with digital filming/photography and computer re touching it was no longer needed.

It's using flash anyway as you can see the softbox reflected in the tank and rider's jacket mainly, and on other parts of the bike. The film is daylight balanced which is why it records the background artificial lights as yellow/orange colour and the main bike is picked out with daylight balanced flash to make the subject colours appear neutral.
They always loved those foreground reflections in the wet pavement in that era which you can't get when it's dry. As already mentioned, marketing desire with a wet image has probably overridden the biker's view of not wanting to be out in the pizzing rain.

In the 70s the tax disc colours ran in a four year cycle of brown, green, red, blue.
From that limited choice of colours it looks like a blue one to me, which could indeed be 1973 expiry (Or '69, or '77).
March '73 expiry gets my vote.
But am I right in thinking you could tax for three months back then?
