Title: Honda CB750 K1 Carb bowl gaskets
Post by: 750rideruk on May 05, 2023, 11:52:28 AM
I have recently refurbed all the carbs on my 1972 K1. I bench fitted all the bowl gaskets while on the bench but needed to remove the bowls once fitted to the bike. The gaskets drop out and are very difficult to locate back into the carb body, especially the centre carbs. Does anyone have any methods to ensure they are located securely without removing the carbs again.
Thanks in anticipation

Can't you glue them to the float bowls?

It's not the best idea but when you have to replace the O-Rings on the 500/550 carbs you need to glue them into place or they won't fit. It's just another version of doing that.

The 750K was glued in rubber gasket from original with a light smear of high temp contact glue.

Julie,

I know the frustration of those gaskets.  I tried a smear of Wellseal but that disn't last.

Is there a preferred brand of glue?

Cheers,

Jerry

We use Alpha AF178 which is a high temp contact adhesive. Not sure if it can be bought in small tubes though, as we buy it in a 1L tin.

No real heat in a float bowl though, they do get the hot air draught off the fins but they also get cooled quite well. Never felt any significant heat in a carb at all.

I used Gorilla Contact adhesive, worked ok.

Julie, Ken,

Thanks for the info.

I agree that the heat may not be the main issue, but the solvent action of the petrol is likely to weaken it...

I'll give the Gorilla glue a try when I next have the carbs out, as you have had success and is readily available.

Cheers,

Jerry

I would have thought normal silicone might work ok or blue Hylomar.

Methinks Hylomar would be easier to clean off that Hondabond!

I don't think the petrol is a big problem, well not on the 500/550, you really only use it to get the gasket into place and after that once it's in place they tend to adapt to the shape and stay in place. I had to remove one of the bowls after just one day in order to heli-coil a thread that had stripped out, bowl came off with small strings of glue still adhering but the O-Ring itself was firmly in place and didn't move at all.

You really only need them to stay in place whilst you fit the bowls, it's not like you remove bowls every few weeks, just occasionally.

The 750K carbs are nothing like the 500/550. The 750 is a flat rubber gasket, not o'ring that is stuck to the flat surface of the carbs not on the float bowls Ken and the float bowls are not held on by screw, but by a spring clip.
