Hey guys,

Got a little bit of time to get the engine out (finally) after much frustration with rusted engine bolts. Was really happy to have sorted that.

Now run into something a bit bigger of an issue.

When removing the cylinder head I noticed the bolt size wasn't right on one side under the side cover. It seems someone has drilled out the original bolt and replaced with a bigger size.

Next I notice that not only have they just drilled this out and cut a new thread they've left all the metal shavings in so there are bits of metal around the hole coming away and tiny bits in the oil.

Which appears to be wearing around the cam

As the hole drilled through the cylinder head also goes down into the cylinders is it worth looking for a replacement head. Also I have one of the heads with the additional 4 bolts at the top. If I can source a new head would any head from a 550 fit?

Also is it worth replacing the cam in this? (pics in next post)

Any 500 or 550 head will fit, the later cam cover with the extra bolts is an upgrade and better. Cam would probably run but better would be nice. In pics looked like the idiot just tapped out the top cover to fit an 8mm bolt you will need a new steel bracket as the soft washer between it an the cover seals the oil in.

Yeah I thought as much, any idea where I can source one as seems like most places don't hold them.

Also know of anyone with a reasonable cam for sale?

Which side bracket is it as i have some nos of one side. Hint there is an L or R on the bracket.

For the cam try Newman Cams in Kent. They may have a blank of the cam you need. If not they can work wonders on your old cam. They brought my CB250RSA cam back from the dead! Best to give them a call and speak directly to Mike Newman.

I believe it's a left hand side bracket.

Got another problem you may be able to help with (I assume like most things the answer is heat) but the head and cylinder are pretty firmly attached through a gasket tried giving it a knock with a dead blow mallet but the cylinder/case gasket is coming away before the head/cylinder. Couple of questions first is, is there a good way to the head off. Second if not can I remove the tensioner, guide and remove both the cylinder and head?

Have you removed the 10mm headed bolts front and back? Yes you can take the tensioner ass out if you lift the cylinders

yep removed the 10mm bolts front and back, will remove the tensioner and see if i can get the whole lot off.

If you are 110% certain that all bolts are out you look closely at each end to find a small screwdriver shaped gap in the gasket where you can GENTLY pry them apart.
