Hope they are warming to me at last, like an old Mullard valve.

Cool  .... 'Thermionics Man' as Neil in the Young Ones used to say

Don't you just hate vBulletin?

I tried it years ago before settling on SMF with Glenn at .net

Golly, I wonder if I can get around to fixing my grans old valve radio, thinking about it that is probably getting a wee bit old these days. Probably not a priority to learn to repair. Are they hard to work on?

Poor you Ash, that's another Anorak you will have to wear  ;D ;D ;D. But, when Cathy showed me her bargain purchase, I agreed with her, it is well worth the money she paid just for the look of it but it would be nice if you could get it working. There's definitely more activity on that forum than the Sandcast forum !!!!

They're fairly easy to work on - none of your modern surface mount pcbs you need a magnifying glass for.  I've got a valve set in my shed,  great sound and all that but there's nothing to listen to anymore.   I'm toying with having a DAB input or connecting it to a CD player.

I don't find it too bad Steve and the search facility works quite well unlike the USA site which is dire at the moment. The worst one is the Sandcastonly forum.

I think I am 'earning' my stripes on there now after a couple of frosty replies that I am 'biting off more than I can chew'. I have a load of old test gear in my loft and going to offer them it for free, as a 'thank you'. Must admit they have been really helpful. Think I will look for an old 50's /60's  tranny radio to fix,  after I get that one working  ::) ::). The 'red-rag' to them is people coming on there asking to fix their classic  'Dansette' record players, after paying silly money on eBay and finding they are not what they were cracked up to be or people wanting to semi-fix them &  'flip' them.

Kind of you Pete .. she loved your cool pony tail BTW. Classic when she told you I have 7 bikes in various stages of disrepair in the garage (well it's 8 actually but I sneaked one in when she was out)  hoping for some kind of sympathy. But she deffo picked the wrong guy to tell that too. "How many bikes do you have then Pete ?" ... Pete :  "  Well I lost count at 27  "

My new found friends on that forum are prompting me to make a 'pantry transmitter' Mike . Evidently it transmits around the hose in AM so you can get the FM programes etc etc on your old AM valve sets/trannies, without modifying them in any way.  Great bunch of guys on there (suspect the demographic is slightly elderly even by my standards) ... now that I have 'earned my stripes'  ;D

Had a good laugh at the 8 bikes and 27 bikes (owned by you two) and told the tale to my Missus.

Her response....along with a steely eyed stare was - 'Don't get any ideas'!!!!!!!!!!!

This 500/4 guru in York with an absolutely pristine CB500K1 gave James and myself info on early 500's. I emailed him about what finish he had on a couple of the parts and he said no problem, I'll check.  it's sitting right next to me in my lounge!

I have lost the plot on this Radio thread Ash. What's sitting right next to you in the lounge and what has a CB500K1 got to do with you vintage radio buffs?  ;D ;D ;D

Tell her if she thinks Pete and myself are mad, hoarding obsessives, then she ought  to meet this 500/4 guru in York with an absolutely pristine CB500K1. He gave James and myself info on early 500's. This modified earlier deleted post is for Julie's benefit  ::) ::) ;D

Nooooooo, I'm still sarf of the Humber. I actually consider being south of the Thames as being 'down South' having lived down there for 54 of the past 55 years, I will always consider myself a 'Southerner'
