thanks to all who have given advice and encouragement over the last few months, bike passed its first MOT since 1982 this morning!! Just tax to get then on the road, it ran ok on the trip to the MOT, a bit noisy, valves and camchain will need adjustment also carbs, but was the gear train always so noisy? This bike only has 6,000 odd miles from new, i dont remember if they used to make this noise back in the 70s. Feels great though!!

good point Florence, flashing headlamps should only be used to inform someone of your presence NOT to say "you go first" The problem is most people dont know this, so can be confusing as you said, so be careful out there!!

i have solved problem. In the handlebar switch horn button there are three wires, one black + feed, one blue to headlamp main beam for flash, one light green to horn, nothing goes to earth as my haynes manual suggests. What happens is, when you push to the right to PA the black and blue wires connect, so operating the h/l flash, when you press straight in for horn the black and l/green wires connect, sending a + current to the horn.ok so far, but the problem is that the other wire to the horn is also a black + feed wire from the loom,so in effect you are getting 2 + feeds and no earth! My solution was to disconnect the black wire from the horn and replace it with a wire to earth on the mounting bolt, now it works correctly. My only question is how the heck did it ever work when new??, Cheers Mick

CB500/550 / 550 horn problem
« on: May 03, 2011, 08:45:38 PM »
Hi guys, well the 550 k3 rebuild is almost there, i booked an mot for thursday, only the horn is not working.Neither did 2 spares,so off i went and purchased a new one, result, still no horn.I checked the horn was getting power from the black wire, it is,and if you earth the other terminal it beeps,so must be switch, but this is brand new.All connections are good so i stripped the switch and i can not work out how the horn terminal goes to earth when you press the button as it is encased in a plastic block ( it is the type that has a PA headlamp flash combined with the horn button) Any ideas anyone??

i am thinking it is fuel rather than electrics, but can't ride it yet as not on the road, will probably have to take carbs off again and clean out, again!

bad news guys, it has gone back to 3 cyls! this time no 2 cyl is not firing properly, the engine sounds ok but a little flat, the no 2 exhaust is not getting hot, but it runs worse if i remove no 2 plug cap so it is doing something.Oh no i thought, another valve, but compression is 140 psi. I tried another plug which seemed to help a little but still not right.Anyone had similar probs? Mick

hi i have a bike you may be interested in, it is a 550 k3 american import which i bought to canibalise for spares. i used the mudguards and some other parts for my other bike, but have got most of the parts to make it complete again. It is in need of a rebuild, and needs registering at dvla. I have had it running briefly,it sounded ok looking for offers around

« on: April 13, 2011, 11:35:23 AM »
i also have a k3 which was off the road for many years and when i fitted the new battery nothing much happened.i found that the fuse connections were not good they must be absolutely spotless, also dont forget the earth wire that fastens on the coil bracket, make sure it has clean metal to earth to.Another issue i had was one of the block connecters behind the fuse box was dirty and if not yet fitted it interupts the earth.Hope you get it sorted, electrics can be a nightmare! Actually i may have a spare loom in my shed, think it maybe a f1 though.Cheers, Mick
