Title: Rear Lamp needed sought with mounting holes 100mm wide at centre line?
Post by: McCabe-Thiele (Ted) on February 04, 2023, 05:53:51 PM
Having recently bought a rear number plate bracket for my UK spec 500 rear mudguard I have found the rear mounting spacing is too wide for the standard  for 400/500 Stanley HM11RC lamp unit. The 4 mounting points fit the rear fender perfectly so looks as if its from a different model.
The 400/500 has mounting points some 94/95 mm apart I need a lamp that has 100 mm spacing.

I assume there must be a similar light with the wider fitting can anyone help with the model or part number I need please?

You have a us 500K2 bracket there and the light that fits will be the large one with 4 screws holding the lens on like on the 550K3 and the late 750

Is that the lamp that looks huge that nobody likes then?

Yes Ted, it's that big it looks like a barn door bolted on the back end of the bike 😊😊😊

This one on Ebay, however due to it being a USA bracket and thus chrome instead of black you must also be aware that the number plate holder is smaller than ours. It can mean the screws come through right where the letters are etc

Ted, do you need the whole lamp, ie chrome and lens. I have spare lens in great nick but the chrome has been painter over.
If you think it will do I can put some pics up in the am.

DS replica is only £17.94 plus VAT at the moment looking at a LED complete unit as an alternative.
It will need a little creative cutting but this was cheap enough to have a go with.

Okay I need to sort out the "sandwich" a tad better as the side view is not acceptable - but the lamp will fit!

In an ideal world a nice block of aluminium would sort out the gap between the LED lamp & the rear number plate mounting.  Aside from the cost it's a lot of cutting that would be far from perfect.

Looking for ideas such as a plastic infill block that's easier to cut. Any ideas welcome to fill the gap properly.

Get some acrylic Perspex in black Ted, something like 10mm, fairly easy to cut and work, used to do it with lots of perspex. A few recesses for the mounting rubbers and you would be able to see anything after. Looks simple enough to do.

I used to do loads of LED conversions for cars about 10 years ago, I'd convert the dash from normal capless bulbs to LEDs, typical conversion was around 100-150 LEDs as they don't illuminate the same as normal bulbs, the beam angle is very narrow so where 1 bulb would work ok you'd need 10 or so LEDs to do the same but it did mean for instance I could get the needles to shine red but the clocks to shine blue. I was thinking of doing an LED conversion in a normal Honda rear light but fitting around 30-50 LEDs in there instead, looks standard until it lights up.

On another note, I fitted an RD250 rear light to mine back in the day, 2 bulbs instead of one so if the bulb blew you weren't left with no rear light as you had the other bulb. Can't tell you the number of times I had to lift the rear brake light switch out of it's bracket so the brake light was permanently lit as the rear light had blown and I needed to get home in the dark. Far better than no light at all and stopped the Police pulling you for having no rear light. The Yamaha light really suited the bike.

Your post reminded me that on  many Mercs there's is a built in back up spare bulb in the tail lights. The dash bulb checker would illuminate - owners thought it was a false message as they could see both lights were still working.

How is the spare big bore 400 engine project progressing?

Hi Ted

Big bore is on hold at the moment as have decided to commit all spare funds to my Tigcraft project to see how far I can progress it in 2023 as its a real money pit as got frame changes to be done by my local frame guy in March, and then a set of bespoke exhausts to be fabricated by Andy over at 2T engineering later in the year

Also in the middle of sourcing all the engine parts so I can complete the 350cc engine comprising of a LC bottom end with A/C barrels and heads and as we know LC stuff is all crazy prices

Not yet

Will need a complete rebuild at some point by Brooks suspension

But plenty of Mitos out there that has had an engine transplant and the 125 single removed has been replaced with a LC motor with no real issue as the LC engine is so light

My buddy Doug has one called a Yagiv and it’s just wow

How long has he had that one done for only I took a piccy outside that big Honda dealership in Swindon a few years ago of an almost identical bike so I think I’ve seen that one before.my pal has an unfair ex one under construction. Always thought it a good idea

A CR 500!!! If I remember rightly I think that might be a step too far for me, afetr I briefly rode one a few years ago I needed new eyeballs and new undrpants...........too much for me!

If I had the cash, the time and the space I always wanted and still do, a NS400 with a big bore kit on it. Always loved them and they were at the highest point of Honda's build quality at the time. I had a poster up in the gagare for years to drible at before it got knackered in a fire extinguisher fight one afternoon! ;D

Managed to improve my LED rear lamp fitting - 10 mm acrylic sheet & 1.5 mm rubber sheet gasket - just need to cut the bolts down a little & fit dome nuts for the end fitting.
A lot of fiddling but enjoyed making it fit with some degree of okayness.

Thanks Phil - just hope the lamp is bright enough I've not tried it yet - a job for tomorrow. The e-bay photo is very misleading as it showed it as a red lamp - then a disclaimer to say the product might be different from the picture.

You could try this Ted, do it on an offcut first though, just to practice.

I've read that if you use heat, maybe a hot air gun or a blow torch at a pinch and gently run it over the edge of the piece where it's been cut it will smooth off all the marks and go glossy. Might just make it look nicer. As I said, try on an offcut first as you may need to practice on amount of heat and distance to hold the heat source from the acrylic.

Interesting I did buff it very lightly was going to try some paint on an off cut - worried about solvent effect. I'll try the hair dryer before I resort to my paint stripper gun.

Tested the light and I'm happy with it - tried gas flame on an offcut no effect until it starts to catch fire. Buffing wheel certainly makes it start to shine but due to my jig saw cutting it just highlights the marks - not going to spend hours buffing only to find it's worn away too much material. Tried some black gloss cellulose paint - one layer improved the look second layer even better so will probably  just brush the edges in.

There is a name for the method of glazing the edges Ted, I looked it up when I was doing the led mods I mentioned, I think the theory went that it’s the fine point between the acrylic melting and catching fire, maybe a heat source not using a flame would be better, I do seem to recall them mentioning using a fine flame though. Maybe it’s a practice thing, you need to do a few of them in order to find the optimum heat and distance.
