Title: Vehicle of Historic Interest.
Post by: royhall on April 03, 2020, 11:32:52 AM
Just about to change one of my bikes to Historic Vehicle and it would appear that the system has slightly changed since the last time I did it. Can it still be done by post or is it only via the post office now. Also, do I need a valid MOT to do it as mine runs out tomorrow. Cheers.

Do it at the post office Roy and you don't need an MOT. Just tick the box on the log book  to change the class to historic. They will tax it for 12 months (FOC) and give you a receipt for that. They will send log book off to DVLA for you for the log book to be changed to historic.

Thanks Julie. There doesn't appear to be a box to tick but I'm sure they will know at the post office. Now all I have to do is hope the pensioners in the post office stay 2m away which seems impossible for them for some reason.

Sorry, you have to write HISTORIC in this box, where it says tax class(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200403/47b80d7fea399dd2eafdf937e8533251.jpg)

Thanks for the info Julie. Just been to a thankfully empty post office and job done. Must be the easiest transaction ever. Also gave me a printout to prove the bikes taxed. Nice one.

I've been to 3 'Post Offices' in local villages and in small towns and none of them will do this for me (I've change my tax class) .. They don't seem to know what it is?!   One suggested I just send the log book to the DVLA...putting Historic in that box.

Has anyone done that? I'm putting my faith in the postman now.

My PO wouldn't do it either.  They couldn't find the right bit of the drop down menu.  Clueless buggers.

This thread prompted me to visit my PO to change two bikes to historic. Bloody painful, useless actually. They took the V5's and told me I needed to buy vehicle tax first? When I explained I was applying for historic tax and therefore didn't need to pay the tax they put the V5's into an envelope and told me to send them to DVLA myself! They tried to charge me 30p for an envelope I never asked for!!! I walked out, absolute plumbs!

I have now changed 12 bikes to Historic, all done at the local post office and a totally painless, instant process. Only 2 more bikes left to do now, in 10 years time 😁😁😁😁

I have registered an American import CB500K2 with the DVLA, and changed a UK KH250 with the Post Office in the last year or so to historic vehicles, both have been totally painless. I believe I will also have, no issues when I finish repairing my 1977 Triumph T140V  and change it to a historic vehicle. Just follow the rules and present the right paperwork and the system works.

Our local Post Office is one of the ones that refused to change the taxation class to Historic. I sent the V5 to DVLC and they did it for me.
It is very frustrating when having to deal with a obstinate local bureaucrat stuck behind the counter of the Post Office

Go to a different office or complain to Post Office that the particular employee does not understand the rules.

I am a big believer in keeping as much local as possible but i will not suffer fools or jobsworths any more

I tend to avoid the PO whenever possible as it seems like the last resting place for "Jobsworth" and the terminal pedantic. Dealing with them makes watching paint dry a positive pleasure.

I had issues with getting my bike into the Historic class, but it wasn't the Post Office that was the problem, it was a jobs worth at DVLA.

Note the resemblance.  The cube shape, the mindless drones...

Went to my Post Office today (Wood Street, Lytham St Annes) to change my Suzuki GS750's V5 to Historic, and to remove it from SORN. Couldn't have been easier.....mind you the Gentleman who served me told me that he'd recently sold his Suzuki Bandit - and he was sorry that he'd sold it......so he was obviously well versed in the SORN/ Historic update process.

He laughed when I told him the GS is 'just a baby' compared to my 50+ year old Triumphs and he very kindly also wished me good weather for this weekend when I told him I'd be riding a bike again for the first time in 6 years.

10/10 for Service.....but it must be really frustrating standing in line only to find that the PO Staff suffer from 'Elbow and arse disease'......i.e. they don't know their elbow from their arse !

Maybe more formal complaints to the Post Office might be worthwhile !
