Someone on the CB250RS Facebook closed group suggested I try ABS slurry to fix cracks and broken mounting lugs on plastic side panels etc.
I thought back to the 90's, when I couldn't buy the correct angle guttering joints for my 1030's house and some old sage where I was working at the time (who had an immaculate BSA Gold Flash Combo) cut a section out of one to reduce the angle and bonded it back together at my required  angle with a paste made up out of the waste material dissolved in MEK. They bonded beautifully and are still on my old house when I went past earlier this year.

Has anyone tried this? I guess the panel materials will have changed over the years. I think the 250RS panels are ABS but I seem to remember my 750K0 panels and airbox were made from some form of styrene. But I guess the theory is the same... dissolve a piece of the same material in a suitable solvent and use that to repair the panel.

This what the FB guy said: Quote :  "Google abs slurry,,, and make some .... glue it on with it ,then build it up round the crack ( takes a day or two to fully cure) permanent fix ... I  glued 2 halves of a panel together with it .... you could bend it as much as the parent material , it doesn't glue, it bonds. I have tried epoxy, fibreglass glues, nothing does it like abs slurry"

Anorak's Corner / Metal Covered Plug Caps
« on: May 05, 2024, 10:18:41 AM »
My UK 750K0, CB400F & 450K0 Bomber all came originally with metal plug caps.

Much maligned on here I know but for originality I am fitting them. I managed to get NOS ND ones for my 4 cylinder bikes  but the Bomber ones are hard to come by. also one of my NOS 4-cyl ones got badly damaged with acid. So this week I managed to de-crimp the corroded one and replated a grotty looking Bomber one. Pretty sure my CB250K0's and K2 would have had them but not found any of those yet.

I plan to do some tests on them to see why they tracked over the HT in the wet. It's not obvious looking at them why they would track. I suspect the rubber insert may not have sealed too well but a new part moulded in silicone may fix it. A lot of heathen dealers (like the one who supplied my 1st 400F ) just ripped the metal covers off and damaged the grey plastic body in the process.

CB350/400 / Alternator loom clip
« on: March 08, 2024, 10:19:47 AM »
Does anyone have a decent pic of a 400F with the alternator loom clip fitted please. A photo of that oil pump area with the cover off (obviously) would be great.  Revisiting my 1986 resto of my '75 400F and correcting things that I didn't fuss too much about when I was a younger man ! Where riding was more important than restoring.

I got this back from Brituro as I needed a pair of RS250RSA downpipes. ( so I panic bought a set via eBay from  one of their  distributors).

Hi Ash,
Brituro silencers ltd has closed, we are temporarily operating under a company called GH Manufacturing

Unfortunately we aren’t making downpipes at the moment.

Kind regards

Joe

Does anyone know the CB400F Throttle cable A & B lengths please?

Have some similar cables mixed up (eg CB250/360G5) and I need to identify which are indeed for the 400F

Anorak's Corner / CB400F airbox rubber sealant
« on: February 09, 2024, 09:30:21 AM »
Any tips on the type of sealer/mastic to use between the the 400F plastic airbox and the rubber inlets/large oval rubber seal.

In the past I suspect I used this black coloured AS1701 silicone sealant. .. however the tube I have is very old and  has gone solid and it's now £50 a tube.

I found I do have some of this black polyurethane 2-part sealant (out of date but still usable) and I will use this unless anyone can suggest something more suitable.

Member 4 Sales / CB500 627B Carbs ***** SOLD******
« on: January 20, 2024, 02:20:00 PM »
I am breaking up these 627B carbs next week to sell the parts on eBay /F.B.  but if someone wants to take them for £45 plus post I will sell on here complete.

The main jet pick-up tube castings are a bit fluffy at the bottom but I reckon could be made to seal OK. However, that's the reason I am breaking for parts and up to you if you want to use them.

Slides move freely, lovely clean float bowls and lifter chromed bar. All float pins free, original Keihin brass-ware and generally pretty unmolested. One spring clip pinged onto the freezing cold garage floor but I will recover so everything complete.

Misc / Open / Honda Owners Club Discounts
« on: January 17, 2024, 09:33:50 AM »
I joined HOC last year to get a dating certificate on my C110 and you occasionally get a magazine but not a patch on the Tansha magazine  but VJMC is a lot more expensive on dating  and they are real sticklers on issuing a dating cert. particularly when it comes to the clarity of VIN frame stampings.

Anyway, the magazine came yesterday and has a list of 2024 member discounts. Interesting that RS BikePaints give 10% discount to members ... didn't know that. M&P and Central Wheels give 5%

The rear outer cover has a full page ad for David Silver Spares ..... but guess who is not in the discount list. :(

Anorak's Corner / Tyre Changing Jigs
« on: January 12, 2024, 08:07:01 AM »
Anyone used one of the cheapo sub £100 tyre changers/bead breakers that are around now. or recommend anything sub £200?

I have loads of tyres to fit plus I need to remove the new tyres from my CB250 RS wheels (alloy rims) , re-plate the spokes and then refit the tyres which will cost me at least £50 at the very limited number of bike shops in this area that are capable of fitting motorbike tyres.

Anorak's Corner / Frame Alignment Checking
« on: January 08, 2024, 11:28:34 AM »
Anyone reading my CB250RSA project resto will see that the bike has one fork stanchion quite badly distorted. I need to quiz the PO in the pub I go to to ask about the history but whatever, I need to check the frame alignment. MCID on here had put me onto an old school bike shop that does realignment but I would like to do some initial checks myself. I was thinking of clamping the frame to a solid bed with a long precision bar mounted through the swinging arm mount tube ( or a bar with cones on it) and adjust the frame position until it is clamped with the bar dead horizontal. (I have a digital inclinometer with dual lasers & accurate to 0.1 degree to set this up). Then mount another bar  with suitable adapters in the headstock tube and check that the bar is at 90 degrees to the horizontal bar in the swinging arm tube. If this measurement is out then worth the 200 mile trip to get it checked out/ realigned. Also been offered another frame with V5 but who is to know if it too is bent? Anyone on here done any DIY frame alignment measurements or can offer any further advice?
The PO (owned from new) did have a donor bike so there is a chance he swapped the stanchions from the donor. I think I will assume that the bottom yoke/ head bearings may be suspect, so I will replace.
