Thanks, Greenbat, taken that onboard.Bike is stripped of everything apart from handlebars and wheels. With oil drained I might try turning the sucker upside down, like you do with a pushbike and have a close look at what is going on, give it a right good soaking with penetrant over a week then hit it with some heat.
If you use a Flatdrive socket (six sided) instead of the conventional bi-hexagon type you'll get a better grip on the bolt head.
Also it might be better to grind off the lead-in of the socket so that it grips further down on the bolt.
Individual sockets can be bought quite cheaply to save altering one out of a complete set.

Hi Steve,
I went to put the box in my recycling bin and noticed the postage charge. :o

I can't let that pass without feeling acutely embarrassed, so please check your Paypal account for an additional payment to cover it.
Many thanks again.

I had a perfect weekend as well.
Working on my workshop all day Saturday repairing the back wall, then up to Hesket Newmarket on Sunday to the VMCC gathering.
A little Honda drew a lot of attention ! ;D

I found the problem today in strong sunlight! The kick start shaft is badly worn on the splines as well as the kick start 'knuckle' joint. Looks like another bodge by the 'restorer'.

I'll bet he wore a blue and white striped apron just like our butcher, when was working on the bike. >:(
More of my pension and the children's inheritance going to DSS soon. :'(

Here's an update -
Having not used the bike for 6 months, I eventually plucked up courage to start the spanner work after I got stranded out on a run with a 'flat' battery. I took the clutch cover off and pulled the kick start shaft out expecting to find something wrong.
Nothing, the shaft, spring and other bits are all OK, so whether the spring had become unhooked I'm not sure. I was able to pull the spring straight off the shaft without first unhooking the tangs.
I'll finish the re-assembly today and report back.
