Final update on this. Turned out it was the standard fitment, Blaupunkt radio/CD. It was intermittently changing from Radio to CD mode even when the ignition was turned off and when it does this it takes about 0.6 Amps. Bunged an old Philips unit from a Mitsubishi in it (with the Ashimoto Iphone etc. audio input mod  :D, to please daughter) and all is fine now. Cheers for all of your advice/comments. These electrical random faults are bu**ers to find sometimes.

So I was right first  time with Bletchley and then thrown a curved ball by Googling it and coming up with Basingstoke! My son works for Network Rail in York and they have new offices in MK .. he's always banging on about 'concrete cows'.

Anyone who hasn't visited Bletchley Park ..I can really recommend it.. plus you can go back any time within the year for free (well it was that  way a few years ago).

I will leave it to CB500/550K aficionados to comment on your bikes as I am a 400/4 ..750 man myself  but your bike  looks mighty fine to me. (don't know how 500F ownership has  eluded me).

By your location does this mean you are near Trigger .. the once time home of Alan Turing? Or is it Basingstoke ? If so, I go to Whitchurch quite a bit. One of my main customers is there (I am in E Yorks).

Yea suppose you right Steve ... but you have the ultimate powers of censorship !!  ;D

 Those cast iron old boilers are great BTW.' Ideal Standard Boilers'  had a problem  that they lasted too long and were easily fixable. They had a patent out on that flame detection circuit using a 741 op-amp! If you need any relays to fix it etc I probably have some if you have the spec. of them or the capacitor. The reactive dropper capacitor is a dodgy component in my view and I told em so at the time ..didn't go down well. At the time I had bought an outdoor PIR lamp for about 12 quid and even the Chinese had the sense to put a proper 'X' rated cappy in their product but Ideal (well Pactrol, as they designed it)  penny-pinched by using a standard el-cheapo one in a safety critical assembly. My mate's  who have a plastic injection moulding  company in Hull, now mould all sorts of plastic replacement parts for them (manifolds, flue parts etc.) ..... will stick with my cast iron one thanks. Roy's correct it may not even be the PCB...if the bug*ers had taken me up on  my diagnostic addition back in '97 you would have had an error code LCD , displaying the cause of  fault !!

Is it like the one attached Steve? Ideal are in Hull and yonks ago I took that board and added diagnostics to it  and went in there to try to sell them the design but I got the 'not invented here syndrome'. I did trace out the circuit but my CAD file is long gone. It's only got one chip, which is a 741 style op-amp for the flame ionisation detector. The capacitor for the power supply is only 400v rated not the proper X1 type normally used  for a 'reactive dropper' so I would suspect that and also the DPDT relay contacts onthe two relays. Dry joints is an obvious one too which I am sure you have looked at, particularly around the power resistors. The flame detecor circuit is the only item of domestic gear that I have encountered that must have the L&N correct way round to operate properly. The boards used to be made by IMI Pactrol. Or is it not this PCB Steve?

Good on yer Julie... have a go and ask as you go along for advice on here. I rebuilt my first 400/4 engine in 1980 and it was a learning curve but very satisfying when you complete the job. Back then, armed with only a Haynes manual and no Internet I deciphered the crankshaft, main bearing shell codes ( I got a crank/rods  from Richies bike breakers in Hull with less than 1k miles on it but of course I had to select new main bearing shells to match my crankcases, so went into the main 5-star Honda local dealers for them to check my selection but they didn't have a clue, so I just said order me these colour coded shells and took a punt on it.  If you do intend to rebuild the engine then my advice is start your hunt now for any NOS 'consumables, like cam chain, primary chain, shells, gasket sets, chain tensioners. If you find them at a lowish cost they are a good insurance policy and better than money in the bank.

Why can't my two daughters (26 and 21) take any interest in anything mechanical like yourself. Plus you get this at 11:30pm  at night.  "Daaaad  The bad news is I just dropped my mobile phone down the toilet  but the good news is, I flushed it before I dropped it down there...pleeeees pleeeeees can you fix it for me  ..or.....  " My phone just went through the hot wash cycle in the washing machine  'cos  I left it in my jeans but it then went through the drying cycle as well  so it should be OK won't it ...pleeees tell me it will  be OK dad" These are true stories and miraculously both phones lived to fight another day  :D. The wonders of isopropyl alcohol..every home should have some.

When I first went to Uni I got gladular fever and had to leave so I  got a job as a 'Temporary Nursing Assistant' in the local mental hospital for 6 months, until I could restart the next year at Uni  ... got some good stories from that experience I can tell you  ;D.

Having read this post I was dreading trying to put on the carb rubbers today on my rebuild. The rubbers were supplied by David silver and went on with a hard push and wiggle so a very happy chappy now.

You won't have any problem with new ones or possibly a bike unused for yonks with low miles. It's the one's like my 750K0 that did 40k miles with  all of that heat and fuel exposure that harden up ( cause of many a broken alloy carb.  link plate  :(  ). Evidently, Vic World the sandcast resto guru in California checks the hardness of the airbox-to-carb 'rubbers' on any sandcast/K0 bike he looks at to buy, in order to gauge if the mileage is authentic.
One thing I am experimenting with as we speak in the CB250k ( and 400/4 as I remember) softening, as they have rubber to metal bonds which don't want to be weakened by the softening process. I have painted the interface of metal/rubber with industrial epoxy so that it stops ingress of the softener into the bonding, during the long softening process.

There are a lot of doubters on the other bike forums about my method but all I can say is I softened  a rock hard '69K0 inlet rubber 5 years ago and it is still soft but never run yet on the bike. I have a video of before and after will have to put on Youtube.  I am also trying to soften the little cover on the CB750 that covers the oil pressure switch. On other forums they bang on about using essential oils and glycerine, which may work too for all I know. However, I tackled the problem scientifically and asked someone who is a qualified industrial chemist and worked in the rubber processing industry for 20+ years and now operates from a university giving advice to industrialists, which he has done for about 18 years ( one of his main areas of work is looking at the crabby materials used in the caravan industry.. anyone who owns a caravan will know the havoc ingress of water into the structure has). We tried several methods whilst I was at his lab doing some other work in 2010 and we came up with the Refos stuff as the best method of softening nitrile rubber.

Having said all of this since 2010 you can now get brand new  pattern rubber parts for some bikes at reasonable cost but on the F2/K7 750's you are still talking a lot of money for Honda replacements. Plus some parts like the oil pressure switch on the 750 are rare or unobtanium.

I wouldn't try the softener out on cam chain/primary chain rollers or other internal parts though ( e.g. primary drive cush rubbers).

I have also got some other stuff I want to try for treating  the finish on other rubber components ( grommets, fork ear isolators etc) which are still soft but have had ozone exposure and develop a hard surface layer. I have some stuff I resurrected a colour laser printer with by removing the surface layer on it's paper feed rollers with 'rubber roller rejuvenator', so this is what I will try out.

Bummer .. should have looked closer at front end..maybe not so good then. I know someone who has a minter and he's a big sandcast and 400/4 man. He says the 350F is an absolute  delight to ride but gutless. The power output is 34 bhp but my \69 350K1 twin which is in fact only 325cc but develops 36 bhp. My point on this bike though is that if DK ever list a bike have a look at the wheel rims as it's usually a good indication of the rest of the chrome. Those two guys who do the eBay bike sales there are really helpful and honest.. a breath of fresh air really compared with other 'traders'. If a bike doesn't sell call them as soon as the auction finishes and ask for a deal. What I find is they sometimes list a bike, it doesn't sell on eBay 1st time around  then second time it goes for good money with several bidders.

This looks a decent project bike for someone as the condition reminds me of the 350 twin I got from them last year. Initially, It looks tatty but look at the state of the chrome on it  (rims guards etc. ). Thing is it does not have standard exhausts but if it did it woud be advertised at a much higher price but the exhausts would probably  still need expensive rechroming, if you can find someone to do it. ( have been quoted 125GBP each for my CB350 twin ones C/W downpipe but only after he has left them  filled with hot caustic soda  for a month).

It's for sale not far   'Heartbeat' country ... wonder if it was ever used as  an extra  :D The one the seller  says he is currently restoring (Triumph Tigress) is no oil painting either , my brother had one in the 60's, it had a 250cc  twin four-stroke engine as I remember. Painted in some polychromatic or. whatever they called,  it light blue. Yes it does have a look of the Scammell three wheel truck ( there is one of those in  Hull's 'Streetlife Museum').

What was that funny little scooter thing used in 'Rebel without a Cause' ( James Dean's sidekick Plato) was it a Cushman or something like that. [ Guests cannot view attachments ]
