They can get hellishly tight and need alot of effort to initiate moving, as you're finding.
When like that, probably only the hydraulic system will move it with the leverage needed. The mastercylinder will generate into the hundreds psi wise.
You could try putting a spacer onto the piston and squeezing in a vice to see if you can crack the corrosion sealing it seized, then see if it'll pump out. Sounds counter intuitive, but once moved from fully stuck they'll usually get going.
Thanks K2 I'll have ago at that tomorrow. Would using heat help?

Hi JW, I primed the brake cable with fluid before fitting it to the caliper, then grasped brake lever but it wouldn't budge. So opened the bleed screw expecting a release of air but the lever still wouldn't budge! Is the nipple loose?
You could try bleeding the system,
Then using the master cylinder to pump out the piston.
Or have I got it wrong?

Evening all, after some adventure with regards to my front brake woes. I bought ant untested complete 400/4 caliper unit, when I picked up a replacemnt frontend. I've tried various YouTube methods to get the piston out; greasegun etc. Could the actual tube be blocked I.e. where the banjo bolt screws in, as I'm getting fluid through the brake cables. For information: the cables, master cylinder, banjo bolts and bleed nipples are all new. The only thing I haven't tried is heat and the caliper is currently soaking in evaporust - until my patience returns 😀
Thanks in adavance Paul

Hi,
Looking at the photo you posted is why I believe the forks and comstar wheels are from a 250N mated to 400/4 stem. I was hoping the rear brake drum would be stamped with a part number.
Cheers

TSD - many thanks for prompt reply I'lllook into that.
I think the front forks I have are from a 250N but I can't find any identifying marks/numbers. I've had a look at the parts catalogue and the ones I have look nothing like the 400/4 forks (different lower mounts where the spindle attaches). Missing everything from the speedo gearing and covers to caliper and mount!

Morning all, I'm in the process of swapping the comstar wheels on my 75 400/4 for some spoked wheels. The front spoked wheel is missing a few bits, but oes anyone know whether the rear drum brake from the comstar wheel will fit the spoke 400/4 hub?
Thanks Paul

Apologies for lack of updates, just been sourcing parts, which include some shiney stainless pins for the foot pegs and a spoked rear wheel with axle spindle (so chuffed and it wasn't the price of a body part). Also purchased some consumables, 10L of evaporust for the tank, more plusgas, POR15, scouring wheels for grinder and some paint for the frame.
Here's the rear wheel, ugly to most but beautiful to me:

They are not 400f kickstart levers. This is mine, with a crack in the usual place. A black plastic cap covers the hole in the knuckle. The allen screw is not original. HTH.
Taysidedragon, thanks for the photos that's a great help. The bottom one is from a CB250, the top one is unknown but more of a match to yours. Maybe I can make one good one out of the pair, as long as its functional 😀.

Does anyone have a close-up of an original 400/4 kickstarter, as I have a couple of different one's; but only one has decent internal splines.

Gonna need a new wiring harness, mister cowboy has been hard at work on that.
It'll definitely need a tidy up, but everything lit up prior to tear down so I may get lucky fingers crossed.
