Chemicals in capacitors responding to heat?

Never heard that before and I’ve been an electronics engineer since 1984.

Really? This is pretty much my go-to when dealing with anything old that suddenly stopped working....

Think they get fitted after the case is in one piece, they slide in from the top. So, no.

I only used it a couple times, once to prime the oil pump before it's first start and then before starting after I'd done the clutch. Maybe one real time too, just so I knew I could!. Then after this oil change, again to prime. Dang!

But bump starting is a second nature to me, have a 2T 250 that has electric start, but the battery is frequently not up to the job. If I was caught in a pinch I'm pretty sure I'd be fine without a kickstart.

Anyhow, I have a 350f one on the way from Germany so if my calculations are correct someone is about to 'find' one and suggest a paltry sum for it on here.... ::)

Since the 400 kickstart knuckles are getting harder to find and more expensive has anyone tried to repair a cracked or broken one?
There is a definite design fault on the knuckle, there is just not enough metal outside of the kickstart pivot hole. I guess with metal fatigue they will all fail eventually, if used.
If not concerned with absolute originality would it be possible to take off the chrome and weld a circular plate onto the outer face of the knuckle. This would beef up the area that breaks and spread the load over a wider area. When re-chromed it wouldn't appear much different to standard.
Wonder if I could get it done under warranty? ;)
Serious answer though, I completely agree. If a plate was welded over the open end you wouldn't need the cap either...

Perfect timing then!  ;D

Dang. I knew straight away without looking what I had done... The knuckle joint has split open and (besides being pretty furious with myself for my lack of mechanical sympathy) I'm looking for a replacement.

I know the cb350f and cb400f use the same part number, so I'm hopeful I will find one eventually. Anyone on here got one they would like to part with?

Brute force, yes. But not too much, it's just perseverance rather than steel bending.

Note about powder coating. If I had the choice again, I'd choose not to. I'd go for paint. I wanted to retain the frame number on the headstock, so the powder coater suggested masking off the number, shooting black, remove masking then shooting a clear coat. This meant two thick coats and in my naivety, i said 'yeah that's fine!'.

Resultant powder coat is pretty thick, and has caused some fitment issues I wasn't prepared for (inside of the engine mount points was so thick it had to be chiselled away!) If you are going to do it, ask how thick it will end up and ask to see some examples on things other than flat colour swatch pieces of metal.

Julie gets another housepoint, yes that's it. Arrived yesterday all fitted and removes a load of the wobble. If I'd known it was a piece of petrol pipe, I might have saved myself the £3.55 plus £2.95 post. In fact I also got the repro pivot bolt as both the ones I had were obviously worn.

It's the bit the lever rests against, looking at the diagrams if you take the bottom nut off the lever, the plate comes off, and the rubber bung goes in the hole next to the pivot bolt. So when the brake lever is at rest, it's squashing the rubber tube.

I think?

Hmmm. So the pivot I have is worn a bit, but the biggest issue is the rubber bung bit the lever is supposed to push against isn't there! I knew I'd missed a bit when I reassembled but the poxy bit of tube that came out didn't look like it would do anything anyway.
Have ordered from the pirate and will hopefully be 'done done'.

Are you sure it is 20-25mm? Not 2.0-2.5mm?

I cannot imagine 20mm play  :o
There's a joke in there but without the Nurse around to control things, I'll leave it!

Definitely 20mm. Will check the pivot, good idea! :)

There's a fair amount of travel in my (front) brake lever before the business end actually makes contact with the end of the master cylinder piston. I reckon I've get 20-25mm of play as seen at the end of the lever. I don't think I can fix it either, you'd have to build up the end to make it contact sooner.

Don't know if it's an original Honda lever perhaps it's a poor copy, just interested if anyone else has noticed similar?

Sprocket, you wouldn't happen to still have the packaging with the product code for just the bottom seal would you? I couldn't make it out from the pic.
Well yes! Trouble is I also have the packaging for the top seal and they are both empty! They are 33-1024 and 33-1007 (Think this is the bottom one, larger ID, on the left of my photo)

Sometimes I love being prepared, photo attached....

Top seal, bottom seal (note the internal diameters) and two different thickness lower race washers (should be called shims, but I'll let that slide....) and one upper.

Because Saturday night Sprocket is an absolute rockstar you can see the instructions with this kit that tell you about the lower race too. :)

Regarding the bottom races and seals, yes, it goes washer > seal > race. In my pic you can see the seal up top, but they do make a good internal seal to the race that's difficult to see sideways on. If I'd known I'd need a pic I'd have taken one!

All told, *my* setup (your mileage may vary) puts the top yoke at exactly the same height as was with the standard bearings. I made a specific note of checking the shoulder of the top of the fork tube was in the right place, prepared for it being a weenie bit high or low, but it's exactly right.
