Title: Saturday salvage.
Post by: Johnny4428 on January 13, 2024, 05:31:36 PM
I happened to be having a conversation with a fellow biker a couple of months ago and told him about my latest purchase of the 550. He then asked if I wanted another? I asked how much he wanted for it and he said same price as he had paid for it! £0. Apparently he saved it going in the skip. Fast forward 4 years and he had decided a while ago that he wasn’t going to do anything with it. I’m not so sure if he should have saved it going in the skip in the first place.😂😂 However I picked it up today and I’ll see if I can get it running, take it from there.

Spend £6-7k it might then be worth £4-5k but it's fun!

Awesome electrics box. Get her running then just ride and enjoy....it'll still be worth a lot as a 'running project,'!

Is that an unmolested spare frame in the background?

Yes Ted, got a reasonable unmolested spare frame with the bike. If it does become a bike I’ll probably use that frame. Either way I’ll get it blasted and powder coated.

Not 100% sure but I may have a wiring harness for a K3 lying around, I'd really need to look though and it's always a possibility I chopped it for some correct coloured wires.

Ah that might be handy Ken, the present wiring is nothing like what should be there.

I’ll see what I can turn up, it may be I have a 500T one. Most of the connectors are the same.

That sounds great Johnny, the video makes it look and sound like a pit garage prior to the start of a 24hr endurance race👍

What prep to get it running? Usual carb clean and points set up?

What were you tinkering with near the offside side panel, at first I thought it was the fuel feed but that looks to be hanging off the rafter.

Ken there’s a choke lever with a sticky cable fixed to side of frame! The wiring is home grown so leaves a lot to be desired. No kill switch, so thought I would disconnect the wire I connected to get power from battery to coils but the bike just kept running so must be being fed from alternator as well. Tim I just pulled the carbs removed all jets cleaned and put them back on. Just cleaned points had to reconnect one plug lead that had detached from plug cap.

Yes it will run from alternator after starting as long as revs are high enough to provide the excitation power

Blimey Johnny, the engine whisperer. It's handy it's running as now it will be easy to get up the plank to the skip. ;D ;D

Good work, sounds quite good condition from it's running noises too. No real smoking, just condensate , and with balance, compression etc sounding absolutely normal.

Ken. Choke lever on side of frame. Not an improvement on Honda design. Neither is the wiring an improvement.😜
No starter solenoid, no lead from starter. Not used with kick starting these bikes, there normally quite reliable with a descent battery.

Now you know it runs Johnny it should be worth fitting something resembling  an actual wiring loom at some stage.
Have you tested the starter motor yet?
That bike should keep you occupied in the dark months of winter. ;D ;D ;D

OMG! If it was used on the road like that, what a deathtrap. 😫

Never seen anything bodged up like that before, but maybe something similar on old British bikes, scary.

Cheers
