CB500/550 / Pitted journal and bearing
« on: December 30, 2016, 05:31:59 PM »
Merry holidays to all :)

I've been slowly getting ready to reassemble my engine, but the more you look the more you see. So I noticed this pit (possibly due to corrosion) on the #4 rod journal which snags on my nail.

Is the crank still usable since I know you can't grind them on a cb500? Should I polish it?

Second there is a pit on the big end bearing of #3 rod which doesn't snag but can be felt with a finger.

Does it need replacing? and if so do both half shells need to be replaced?

Thanks for your help

Thanks for the reply.

The rest of the piston seems to be in spec only some light scuffing and discoloration. Is there anything I can do to get rid of the pitting? skimming, sanding or polishing?

Cheers

Three of my pistons look like this.

They have some concerning pitting but otherwise they're fine and have no damage. What could have caused this and do they need replacing?

Thanks

After reading more about gaskets I think my above reasoning is wrong. Plus I mixed up oil and exhaust gas.

Any more opinions on these pictures.

Thanks for the reply.

That's what I thought as well since the scratches don't go outside the gasket area. So as long as there are no high points gas shouldn't get past. But this is my first engine rebuild so I thought it best to ask.

any tips on that carbon. Would a dremel and brass wire brush be safe on the aluminium. From what I understand scotch brite and other abrasives are a no no.

Hi,

I'm in the middle of rebuilding my engine. Whilst cleaning my cylinder head I noticed a couple of marks I can feel with my fingernail on the sealing surface. I tried to be careful so they might have been there already. Would the head need machining or would the gasket be able to handle it?

Also any tips on removing carbon deposits from the piston and the head?

Cheers

Well I am going to rebuild the engine. Even though I don't think it needs it (I haven't run it for that long and I did put oil and new filter in it before I did anything). There are stories of these things running on less cylinders on the road and coming out fine or am I misinformed.

Anyway better to know exactly what the state of the internals are so I don't have nasty surprises later on.

Cheers for the advice

I thought these bikes had a bullet proof reputation.

Fair enough I'll take the lower half off. Or maybe rebuild the entire thing and have peace of mind. Didn't think this would be necessary with only 22 000 miles on the clock

Cheers

Thanks for the reply.

I had it started 4-5 times for 30 seconds or so each and only one more time for 5 seconds after the throttle video. Do you think that would be enough to cause damage?

When I checked the oil after running it had a faint whiff of petrol but surely the engine can handle a little flooding. The engine is off the frame so do you think it worthwhile to open it up?

Thanks again

CB500/550 / Rod Knock Question.
« on: September 10, 2016, 02:10:45 PM »
Hi everyone,

I am restoring a cb500 k1 and I am having all sorts of trouble with it. Its my first project and my first 70's SOHC so I don't know much that isn't in the manual. I rebuilt the carbs and managed to get the engine ticking over but only on cylinders 1 and 4 (the PO electronic ignition has failed). It sounded pretty rough but I wonder if there isn't something worse like rod knock going on. I've attached two videos, one at idle and one with some throttle.

I'd appreciate if someone could tell me if that sounds normal for two cylinder running.
