Title: How do I hold this shaft to undo the end nut?
Post by: McCabe-Thiele (Ted) on March 15, 2021, 04:12:22 PM
I probably should have done it before I removed the clutch etc what's the best way to hold the shaft to loosen this nut?  Is it by popping in a pair of gudgeon pins and putting a shaft through to hold the con rods fast?

I need to remove the circlip to the bearing then somehow presumably tap out the bearing any tips?

..

Is there not a risk of chipping the teeth doing this?

The copper washer should be soft enough,

The RD Yamaha forum recommends a wedge of cloth to jam the gears

A washer or coin will work fine, I used a piece of cloth successfully many times ;)

Copper coins are now made of steel coated in copper, test with magnet first.

Would an impact wrench not loosen it?

This is my plan.

Back in the day,
An impact wrench was a chisel and lump hammer.

Oh

And the blue boxed Wessel with Phillips bits that chewed the heads

That's because the screw heads were JIS (Japanese Industry Standard) and not Philips

Okay nut now undone with cordless impact tool - prevented shaft rotation with long JIS shaft  through gudgeon pin with plastic pipe sleeve to prevent marking the casing, cam chain was free from casing sides. Gear, spacer Circlip, bearing and shaft etc removed as per the video link  below courtesy of "smoothoperator".

Which back when I was starting biking, I (and many others) didn't know! The brit boys said Jap crap screws was made of 'monkey metal' not knowing about JIS

Or use a piece of hardwood.  It won't damage anything.  I've done it that way for years

I was bereft of hardwood but had some offcut 15mm Speedfit pipe to hand.
