Title: Bike update after MOT
Post by: Colonial-Clive (yindi) on April 22, 2017, 12:05:54 PM
So it went for its MOT and failed rear break pulse (took wheel off yep 95% touching) need too find engineering firm in my area, hand break touching handlebar! I need two hands too achieve this feat, left hand grip can be move and come off er no it's got bar end mirror, I know it's what it is and finally shockers froze, all in all not too bad shocks fixed, grip sorted just breakers to go.

Meanwhile on the way back the bike died 3 times electric or vapour lock who knows this all comes under the pleaser of owning an old bike.

Man in Huddersfield replaces cast drums, you need a well fixed big lathe to do a complete wheel like he does. His contact details are on here somewhere

The pedal moving up and down when applying the brake, caused by a warped or cracked brake drum generally. :'(

Well mine has been doing that for years now, mentioned it to the mot guy a few years back and he said it didn't matter as long as the brake had the required stopping power.

Lol yeah maybe I do, but practically speaking he is correct, if the bike will stop within the prescribed limits then what does it matter if the pedal 'pulses'? makes nooo difference

Fair chance of it locking up in an emergency braking situation, or on a wet road, rolling road brake testers show the fault, and strictly speaking it SHOULD fail. Coaches and buses have to have a brake roller test every 6 weeks, more than 10% imbalance left/right on any axle, and any sign of ovality on any wheel is a failure.

Ah but once a hairline crack starts and you get that pulsing, eventually the next failiure might well be the lining comming appart and a stray bit locking the rear wheel up, which admittedly might take years but how often do you inspect the rear drum? I have one cb500 drum brake awaiting re lining where a 1 inch square or thereabouts lump of the lining has come out and is awol. I've also had brake shoes unglue their lining and the loose lining get stuck, locking the rear wheel. Luckily it did it happened at a traffic lights in stop start traffic and I was able to drag the bike to the pavement and pull the rear wheel off and remove the offending liner to at least the bike rolling but it could have been anytime and gave me a bit of a stop and think about keeping things maintained, preferably not using cheap pattern parts etc. Those who know me and my ratty collection of rusty old machines might doubt they are looked after at all but brakes are well worth looking after given that even the rear one that sees little use, can still lock up and give you gravel rash.

I agree.  My rear brake locked up on a road test causing 100 quids worth of damage - hence my selling a tacho on ebay.

If you read the testers manual A pulsing brake is a fail but only if tested on a brake roller tester or road test as you cant feel it if a spring balance type is used. Not exactly fair but such is life and VOSA's mentality

I haven't seen the spring balance type test used in 15 years. Is it still around?

My MOT guy used to have one, not that he ever used it.  When he retired and sold the business,  the new guys had to upgrade the equipment as it was deemed a new business.

Yep, still a few old stations have them. See one last year at a auction, made a fortune  :'(
