Title: 550K0 restoration
Post by: dv11250 on March 28, 2019, 11:21:47 PM
Bought the CB550K0 three weeks ago, US model bought from England with a seized engine.
Having raced karts for 15 years I thought an seized engine rebuild would be fairly easy.

So bike stripped down to the frame in 2 days.

Rocker cover off to discover that one the cam gear screws was down inside the head channel. no option but to split the cam chain and order a new link.

head off and inside pistons are at the top and outside pistons bottom. no movement in the crank at all. :'(

Only 1mm on inside bores to fill with release fluids
soaked in parrifin for three days - no movement.
soaked in Diesel for three days still no movement - applied 2 heat guns until the diesel was bubbling - still stuck
soaked in Liqid-Moly penetrating oil and TQF and heated every night for 10 days.
last night got 0.5mm movement by rocking barrels front to back with a large screwdriver under the fins ay the rear and a 5mm steel plate under the front fins at the two raised points on the front of the crankcase.
Tonight same rocking again while my son tapped the pistons gently with a wooden block and hammer.
30 mins later barrels off - 2 x small ends tight.
 next session tomorrow night

You are going to be splitting the cases on that one so just fit new cam chain not link. Would suggest new primary as well.

Thanks Bryan for the advice on the chains

just working out what all i need for the engine/bike rebuild on get order placed with DS (unless there is anywhere else to get bits).

Got the engine stripped down completley.
Could someone advise what this is screwed into the bottom of the crankcase towards the rotor side

It direct a bit of oil to the primary chain, should be two things screwed in leave them there.
Primary damper rubbers are a good idea inside the primary driven gear where starter gear is.

Good advice Oddjob. Am I correct to assume the same also applies to the big end shells?

Piston rings arrived this morning from Cruzinimage.

Could someone advise the order they are fitted.
I know the oil ring is in the bottom slot.
The other two rings are black and silver with STD marked on them.

Takes over an hour to cut with the tractor lawnmower, never mind doing the edges.

question on Coils,

I think the coils were removed at some time, some has started to restore the bike before I got it as it has a 75 tank

1.should the HT leads face the rear of the bike, mine face forward.
2. how are the leads numbered. one coil is numbered 2+3 with the leads at the bottom facing away from you, the other coil leads were not numbered.
3. looking from the seat position what coils are mounted left and right positions

I have replaced all the HT leads as per Ash's coil rebuild and are ready to refit

The H.T. leads face forward so you have the coils fitted right

The left hand coil connects to cyl 1 and 4 and the right hand to 1 and 3

Doesn’t really matter if you mix up 1 and 4 leads OR 2 and 3 (that said lead length probably won’t let you do that)  because the system is a “wasted spark” one in that 1 and 4 fire together and 2 and 3 fire together

Above assume 1 and 4 coil connect to the blue wire to points and 2 and 3 to the yellow wire

Any wiser than me please feel free to correct!!!

Dismantled the carb rack and carbs and jets in the ultrasonic cleaner.
Can someone advise how to get the pivot shaft off the frame

You will be looking for the 2 woodruff keys
Edit...oh, and you need to drill the pin out.

Been working away at the cb550 over the last couple of months, and nearing completion

stripped the tank, side pods and headlight casing and took the bull by the horns and had a go at spraying for the first time.
put the bike all back together and tried to get it started, no spark on 2+3, new capacitors fitted and engine started first time.

fitted new Delkevnic 4-1 exhaust
2 x avon AM26 roadriders
New RHD headlight unit with H4 bulb.

Down to MOT centre this morning and passed the test.

still a bit of tinkering with the ignition and cards as it is not running smoothly.

Just a matter of time until it runs as good as it looks. And it looks great.
