Title: Tank sprayers
Post by: Bitsa (Ralph Wright - RIP) on January 12, 2014, 02:22:24 PM
Hi Guys,
Recently got my hands on a near rust free tank. What I want is your recommendations from guys that have used who they suggest and what your thoughts are. Here in France I know a good man but because of the situation here his prices are sky high so I am thinking use a good Brit firm.Example I can buy a bike bench with postage from the UK  for 2 thirds of the price here and that's without post.It does have a couple of silly little dents to repair but apart from that no problems.Ideas please expected cost etc.
Cheers
Bitsa

You could try David Burton at www.bike-painting.com near Taunton.

I bought my CB900FZ from him - he was responsible for the paint.

Hi Bitsa,

I got my 400F tank + 4 side panels re sprayed by a guy up in Bigglewade (an hr north of Luton 'ish) for £300 this year. I supplied him a mint tank / panels ...but in the wrong colour. Decals set me back another £80.

Ken just takes in 'odd jobs' & does the stuff in his spare time @ home.... if you're in a hurry forget it. But, (in my view) the wait was worth it; I got the tank done in OEM cellulose (versus modern water based) & with a clear coat laquer on top (again, as it would have been supplied) He's an old school chap - wanted to hand apply the stripes: good god, I can't imagine the skill required there. (but as I say, I went for the decals).

If you think you might be interested let me know & I'll pm you Ken's contact email - though no guarantees he's looking for the work....

Simon

I got the correct colour from RS paints, bought decals and prepared the tank myself. Then got somebody I know who works in a car body shop to spray tank and side panels - applied decals and then give tank/panels back to sprayer to put final laquer cout on. Cost me £40 for paint, £20 for decals and £70 for spraying. Top job and finish.  I'm sure any good car body shop will do similar job/price.
Tried to upload photos but no luck again! Similar standard to the pics on this thread

Too big Phil.

There's a limit of 300k (helps to save server space/costs and lower resolution pics are quite adequate on a forum.

You need to resize them.

There's a FAQ here (http://www.sohc.co.uk/index.php?topic=1915.0).

Probably too late now, but Andrew parnaby did a very good job for me. Believe I posted pictures a few years ago. He does all the work for Rising Sun restorations. He used the correct laquer over silver to get the candy gold etc.

I have his number if required

Thanks guys for all your tips but going on 2 company's i have spoken with do not think its a good idea because of possible damage in transit.Would not be happy if that happened after coughing serious money out.I know you can insure but going through that again to get it repaired  does not make it cost effective.
Again Thanks All

Plus 1 on Andrew Parnaby he did mine too. He's Marston Moor Business Park, Tockwith , N. Yorks next unit  to John Wyatt (or he was when I used him). Suppose it depends on where you are located, as I don't think he likes posting the finished parts. (just noticed you are in France!!)

Cheers

Hi Billy I think I payed £375 for the green bike I supplied the decals and he wasn't that impressed and new side panels and £475 for the gold bike with painted decals and he repaired the original side panels.I spoke to him last week and hes in the process of moving so isn't taking anything on for a little wile.

From memory Andrew Parnaby charged me £550 for a set of 750K0 paintwork (I think in 2011) but that included repairs and painted on stripes. Of course the K0 has more painted parts than the later bikes.

Think Pete was referring to Daytona. I spoke with Andrew today and he's in the same unit next to John Wyatt still..

Does anyone know of a good tank sprayer within reasonable driving distance of Bournemouth? Looking to get my CB550 tank and side panels resprayed and would rather take it somewhere myself rather than risk it getting damaged in transit.

Cheers,

Steph.

My 900 was done by a guy in Yeovil. If that's not too far I'll dig out his details.

hey Steph,
I work at Moore Speed Racing in Poole .. And we have been using these guys, http://www.wickedcoatings.co.uk (http://www.wickedcoatings.co.uk)
They are geared up for hydro dipping, but their spray shop is great for all kinds of paint, we use them for all sorts of bike parts give them a call. Probably where I'll get mine done once everything else is done ;)

Thanks for the replies  :)

Steve, Yeovil is doable but it is a particularly rubbish drive from Bournemouth! If I can use someone more local it would be preferable but I will bear it in mind.

Thanks Yodasoldier, I'll have a chat with those guys and hopefully sort something out.

Thanks,

Steph.
