Title: dishwasher
Post by: billy192 on July 22, 2014, 10:05:03 AM
Ok so I have been caught using my wifes dishwasher with bits of my CB500T.
my question, i bought my own dishwasher for the garage would i do any harm if i put things like cylinder head (stripped obviously) has anyone tried things like a head and barrels in a dishwasher? would it warp it?

Standard dishwasher cycle is 60 degrees C

Just don't use the tabs...

do you think it will get all the grime off the parts, if only enough to get clean enough for paint?

I did wonder when I was writing that.

Without any cleaning agent, you are effectively washing your parts in 60 degree hot water.

I always thought that standard dishwasher tabs were corrosive (hence why stuff has to be "dishwasher safe" and why you never put decent glasswhere in them). They clean stainless steel cookwear but I have no idea as to their suitability for aluminium alloy.

A search on www.sohc4.net might turn up some advice.

If you use the tabs it will sent Aluminium black but it does polish up well.I clean master cylinders on the hob and place a dishwasher tab in with it and then they are a doddle to polish.

Green1 is right about alloy going black. I once put some carbs in that were really grimy. They came out nice and clean but black. They were a devil of a job to get shiny again due to being so intricate. Wont be doing it again since discovering vapour blasting, that makes them clean and shine like new. Not too expensive either.

well got it and did a few trial runs. first with the finish tabs (other good products are available)
and the it went a bit black, but after washing again with washing up liquid it went back to original. next tried a 1/4 pint of ultrasonic cleaner. did not go black but did not clean much oil off
then tried dish washer cleaner from the pound shop and a little squirt of fairy.

look for yourself. i think its good enough for painting.

Yes  the rabbit now sits under an umbrella so to avoid that problem
Which reminds me of the joke
A bear goes up to a rabbit and says to him hey fella do you find when ttaking a dump that shit sticks to your fir, the rabbit replys no such problem, so the the bear says great and picks up the rabbit and uses him to wipe his arse
