Title: What price CB750K1 project
Post by: Andrew-S on December 03, 2018, 06:58:38 PM
Grateful for some advice please.

I'm considering options to replace the Honda CB750K1 I owned in the 70's i.e. buy a good rider or go down the project route. If a project, it would a be longer term restoration, say 2 - 3 years.

I don't want a basket case and ideally a UK bike that's all there (but wouldn't turn away the right import), it would need to be running restoration project e.g. maybe needed a new paint set, exhausts, rewire and general TLC etc - I know it will all depend on what needs doing and could end up being a false economy, but what kind of ballpark money should I be expecting to pay for such a bike?

Thanks

Well, I know how much Paul paid for this one and it came with masses and masses of spare parts  and I also know within reason what he has spent on it so far . A UK CB750 K1 is a very, very rare bike, the UK CB750 K2 is almost as rare as there were never that many in the UK and there are even less now, they are even rarer than Sandcasts. If you want an import contact forum member James Sussex.

I know a member on here who says he is selling up and he has a lovely and totally unmolested K1 (USA though)

Thanks for your replies, I've been previously reading Paul's K1 restoration thread and it got me thinking about my options.  I've restored a Triumph TR6 (car) and that was painstaking, detailed and time consuming work, so I'm not necessarily looking to go that deep again, but Paul's work is very impressive.  A running restoration could be route one.

I'd prefer to find a UK bike and I'm in no rush, but when that search has run its course I'll be looking for the right import, either US or European.

For the rider option, I see what appear to be decent looking K1s (and K2s) for sale at what I would consider strong money e.g. £9,000 - £12,000+, not sure they are there yet, or are they?

Despite what's on FleaBay, what can I realistically expect to pay for a good rider (UK and import), correct in detail/spec with known history?

Thanks again

You will find USA K1's and K2's at about  £9,000 - £12,000 in top condition but, the UK units demand even more as they are rare these days. K1 sales in the UK were only for one year and not a lot were sold. The UK K2 was sold from 1972 to 1975 and the 1972 is more sort after with the correct engine. My fully restored and correct UK, K2's sell between 15K to 18K  depending on the year.

Different spec between the UK and USA units were, handlebars, switch gear, rear mudguard, tail light bracket, rear indicator mounts and so on.

If you wish to go the DK route and take your chances >>> https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1971-Honda-CB750K1-Unregistered-US-Import-Barn-Find-Classic-Restoration-Project/332912141655?hash=item4d831c2557:g:fgwAAOSwhspcAB-U:rk:1:pf:0

I have a 1970 K1 which will be for sale  soon
The bike is us but uk registered in my name, I rode it for a year or so then put it away due to divorce and health problems it has sat in my heated garage for a while unused,
It is a survivor , an unmolested original bike, I was going to restore it but could not bring myself to change it from it's original condition
It will be on eBay in the new year but if anyone is interested in it on here then I am all ears

I've seen pictures or Pete's bike and talked through it with him - in my opinion, you can't go far wrong than getting in touch with Pete. It's a really decent bike and perfect for what you're looking for in my opinion. Pete is also a great guy & know by many on this forum. James
