CB350/400 / 400 four kickstart
« on: October 02, 2016, 11:47:39 AM »
Hi all, does anyone know if the 400 four kickstart lever is specific to the 400 or will any other model one fit?
The one on it is beyond repair and they are not a common item.

Project Board / Another project ... a 400 four
« on: January 01, 2016, 10:25:09 PM »
Hi all, it's been a while. Now that the K1 is done I am having a go at a 400 four although it's not mine.
I have tidied the engine up a bit, it is a good runner (or so I am assured) so it just needed cleaning.
The rolling bit is in good nick but the fella wants it café racering (if that's the phrase), which is a shome as it would make a bloody good resto.
Still, it's his bike.
Here are some pics, not good ones of the bike, sorry.

Other Bikes / One down a couple to go.
« on: June 22, 2015, 01:26:02 PM »
Well with the Honda all but finished it gave me time to play with another project I have been messing with for the last year or so.
It is close to finishing now, just needs a few bits doing, oh, and a set of exhausts (or hen's teeth).

That frame is the background is the RD 400 I need to do, that still needs a bit of fettling.

Project Board / One down, two to go

Well, the Honda's done (near enough), now to finish the GPZ900R and make an effort to do something with the RD400.

Project Board / A quick video
« on: June 07, 2015, 11:04:14 PM »
Just a quick vid of the K1. The seat's not right but I have made a Honda stencil, I just need some vinyl paint now (and some bottle to do it)

CB750 / Oil leak sussed (hopefully)
« on: May 22, 2015, 08:02:06 PM »
After the engine going in and out three times now I have finally got to the bottom of the latest oil leak and it isn't pretty.
In the past the cam chain has been slopping about something chronic in the tunnel, in fact there is evidence it has probably snapped at some stage. There is a massive groove on both sides of the tunnel resulting in a hole that someone has tried to fix with what looks like Araldite.
Number four piston has a slight chunk out of the top of it, nothing serious, just a nick and number one piston is a new one which suggest a valve to piston get together. The slipper is new as are the roller wheels on the tensioner and also the cam chain looks new. There is also a new can carrier for some reason.

Anyway, if you are of a weak disposition look away now.

A bit of wear me thinks.

Yep, definitely wear.

Araldite failing in it's repair task.

Luckily I got hold of another set of barrels so it is quite an easy fix. (he says)

If this doesn't sort out the oil leaks I give up.

CB500/550 / Classic Mechanics

There's a CB550 in this month's Classic Mechanics if anyone fancies a gander.

Project Board / CB750 K1 as finished as it's going to be..
« on: May 18, 2015, 07:06:32 PM »
..at least for now. Not a restoration, more of a tidy up. I still need to do something with the seat, I am making a stencil for the back to put a Honda logo on it but for now it's done and no more oil leaks (I hope).

Sorry if I have "over-pictured" the thread but I thought I might as well make the most of the post, as it were.

CB750 / Tacho drive leaking oil
« on: May 10, 2015, 06:35:15 PM »
Hi, I know it's not a new problem for you lot but it is driving me nuts. The oil is leaking from the tacho drive on the cam cover, which is not uncommon I gather.
How can this be fixed, I have been told to replace the oil seal but I am having the devil's own job getting the old one out, any hints?
Someone also told me that as they are quite a loose fit and a new seal might not do the job.
Is there a sure fire fix for this?

Ta.

CB750 / Road tax

Fitted a new tax disc holder and disc today. It's amazing how cheap tax disc holders are lately.   ;D

Misc / Open / Road tax question
« on: April 30, 2015, 10:19:29 PM »
Are there any old duffers out there with remarkable memories that know how much road tax was for bikes in 1972?
I think you had to get either 4 or 12 months in those days or was that just for cars?

CB500/550 / 1972 CB500 K1
« on: April 12, 2015, 11:02:22 PM »
Hi all, I have come across the above bike for sale and the seller has asked me to make him an offer.
It is a runner but a complete mess, a lot of work to make it look right. I know it a "how long is a piece of string" type of thing but what is a reasonable offer?
I have tried looking around for a similar thing to gauge a price but they seem to be either basket cases or minters.
Any help would be appreciated.

CB750 / Neutral light won't go out.
« on: April 09, 2015, 04:18:08 PM »
This is odd, when I put the bike in gear the neutral light goes dimmer but doesn't go out altogether. I disconnected the wire from the sender and it went out until I earthed it and then it came on ok.

Any ideas?

CB750 / 750 K1 carb trouble
« on: March 30, 2015, 09:39:59 PM »
Me again.
I have a bit of a problem with fuel coming out of one (or more) of the carb overflow pipes when the pipe is leant onto it's side-stand. It doesn't happen on the main stand so I assume there is an issue with too much fuel in the float bowls. Assuming it's the float heights, can I check the float heights with the carbs still on the bike or do I have to remove them?
If it's not the float heights, then any ideas what else. I have renewed the fuel tap rubbers as they were perished so now that is fine.

Cheers. (again)  :)

CB750 / Light at the end of the tunnel
« on: March 19, 2015, 07:28:52 PM »
I am so close to finishing the K1 I can almost taste it. I just hope that light at the end of the tunnel isn't a train coming.  :)

It runs although it pissed fuel everywhere because the fuel lines are so far gone (valuable lesson learnt), all the electrics now work and I managed to get hold of a re-chromed front mudguard for buttons (well, comparatively).

All it needs now is a rear mudguard, headlamp and rim (the one that's on is a concave Cibby thing with a dented rim), matching indicator lenses instead of the multi-coloured ones that are on, the rear brake assembly as it is away having three feet of powder-coating removed and a few other bits and bobs.
Most annoying thing is I need a set of seat blocks and a seat spring that pops it up. Any ideas? DS is the obvious but the blocks are special order and the spring is discontinued.

Oh, and I need to do something with the seat and sort a strap out and see if I can put some chrome strips on it.
