Project Board / Return of the Foale
« on: May 21, 2015, 09:05:59 PM »
I can't find my old thread, but some of you may remember my Foale framed CB750 project - the avatar shows it before stripdown, and by spring last year it had progressed very well and rather expensively, so much so that work went on hold while I frittered money on irrelevancies like children and food. Anyway it now looks like work can restart and with luck it may see the completion of this thing during the summer. The biggest remaining hurdle is cutting and brazing the Swarbrick CR750 exhausts to route round the sidestand, and to make the 'silencers' (notthe  most accurate description...) sweep up a bit and avoid the swinging arm. In summary it is now a Wiseco 836cc motor with a close ratio box of unknown origin, CR29 Keihin carbs, a lumpy camshaft of unknown make, Lockheed calipers on custom mounts, and a Rickman-based fuel tank with oil tank within, beautifully made by Holtworks of Essex.
I'll try to keep the board updated with progress anyway. Safe riding folks!

Other Bikes / Foale CB750 update
« on: July 23, 2012, 10:03:56 PM »
Sorry folks but have been mainly on the USA sister site with this one, but had some top class help and advice off the .co.uk site early on - just a couple of pics to show 'before and after' or perhaps more accurately 'before and as far as I have got so far' with the Foale frame and K4 engine. Not running yet, but final shape now in sight.

Misc / Open / 9th January 10.30pm BBC3

If anyone wants to tune into this  - http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b019hg1n/episodes/guide

You may be unfortunate enough to get a glimpse of my ugly mug on it - they filmed some clips of anecdotes from me (and hundreds of other far more successful cops than me!) and put them together for this series. They may well have edited me out completely, but it promises to be a good series from what the producers reckoned - always nice to hear of the criminal classes screwing up!

Misc / Open / One for your diaries - superb event coming up
« on: October 07, 2011, 10:42:03 PM »
Now this may sound a long way off in terms of both time and distance, but bear with me - The Shetland Classic Motor Show and Tours 2012 dates are now confirmed, it is from 31st May to 5th June 2012, with the exhibition itself being over the weekend of 2nd and 3rd June.
I have to say I am not one who habitually attends shows - I did Stafford about 3 years ago, I went to the NEC Bike Show for several years on the run but haven't been to that for maybe four years or more, but the Shetland Classic is different. It is held every two years, so if you don't go this time then you can't go again until 2014. I thought i'd give it a go in 1998 as a one-off. I have been back for every one since, so in an anoracky sort of way this will be my eighth. Yes it is a long way - for me it is 370 miles to Aberdeen, then there's the overnight ferry trip to Lerwick. Some travel a lot further, but as far as I am aware everyone who has been has enjoyed it. The Show itself attracts (as I recall) about 500 exhibits in various groups from bicycles through stationary engines, motorcycles, cars, commercials and ultimately Traction Engines (5 of them in 2010), and exhibitors from all over the UK and beyond - Faroe, Denmark, Holland - even Wales. One bloke comes regularly in a Vincent with wicker sidecar. If you want to see dedication personified, watch his other half trying to walk after getting out of the sidecar at Aberdeen docks!
Last time the oldest vehicle was a 1904 Darracq, and the bike exhibits run from the early years of the last century up to the present day. Exhibits are either in the inside halls of the very large Clickimin Centre in Lerwick, or in the grounds around it. If you put your bike in as an exhibit it doesn't mean it gets locked away - it can be parked outside overnight (with security patrol free of charge for peace of mind) and you can use it as often as you like to explore the place, or you can join one of the Tours which take place on the two days before and the two days after the main weekend, depending on the class of vehicle - car, bike, commercial, and the date of the vehicle - pre or post 1980, or was it 1960, I forget, but you get the idea.
For a taste of what was there in previous years there is a fairly crappy website at http://shetlandcms.co.uk/    but the photos are good and give you an idea of things.
If you want to express an interest in going then you need to contact Graham Johnston at graham.johnston10@btinternet.com or write to The Shetland Classic Car Club c/o 69 Gilbertson Road,Lerwick, Shetland ZE1 0QJ. Bookings start in November and spaces on the ferry are limited, so if you at least express an interest then you will get early notification of what is available. They do arrange discounts on the ferry fares, and a variety of packages to get best value for money. There are loads of hotels, B&Bs, and camping with excellent facilities.
Additional to all this, the people are incredibly friendly and welcoming, the scenery is amazing, and it is as far from a Monday morning as it is possible to get.
I'm going, and all being well the Foale project is too. And the wife of course.

Misc / Open / A little light humour
« on: September 20, 2011, 10:03:52 PM »
An elderly man was stopped by the police around 2 a.m and was asked where he was going at that time of night.

The man replied,

"I'm on my way to a lecture about alcohol abuse and the effects it has on the human body, as well as smoking and staying out late."

The officer then asked,

"Really? Who's giving that lecture at this time of night?"

The man replied,

"That would be my wife."

Where's My Old Bike? / Black 1975 CB500/4 KCA257N
« on: September 01, 2011, 10:42:34 PM »
I sold this bike in 1981 in the South Manchester area. It was fitted with a chrome 4 into 2 exhaust, a Rickman cafe racer fairing, clip-ons and rearsets. I heard from a third party that it was fitted with a CB550 engine about a year later, but never had that confirmed. Haven't seen it since I sold it - has anyone else?

Misc / Open / CB250 meets CB500/4 and lives happily ever after.
« on: August 11, 2011, 09:17:31 PM »
Tried to post this before but lost it in the ether. Anyway as a former owner of a CB500/4 (1980 to 81) I suppose this is a logical extension, if not as well made as the CB ever was.
Somebody asked me to post pics of this on here when it arrived, so here it is. And believe me it sounds phenomenal.
It will be at the Shetland Classic Motor Show in Lerwick in early June 2012, as I hope will be as many forum members as possible because believe me it is well worth the trip. The Foale CB750 should also be coming, courtesy of a horsebox which can also be converted to carry horses when not constructively moving bikes...
Will post more on the Shetland Show as it gets nearer, but check out the previous - not the best of websites, but a great few days every two years. Go to Photo gallery and see 'motorcycles'. http://www.shetlandcms.co.uk/

CB750 / CB750 Big Bore kits
« on: June 27, 2011, 11:34:37 PM »
Having decided (almost) that the 810 pistons in the CB won't be reused in its rebuild, I was going to get a set of Wiseco 836cc pistons. I have heard of Wiseco and I think they are OK (opinions please...)
However a well known internet auction site has now thrown up a set of 'Cycle X' psitons which take it to 850cc.
Any opinons either way on Cycle X versus Wiseco please?

CB750 / Rear hub CB750/500
« on: June 04, 2011, 09:03:36 PM »
Anyone know definitively if a CB500 rear hub is the same as or interchangeable with a CB750 - or is the 750 heftier to cope with power/weight etc?

Interchangeability / Benelli sixes
« on: May 12, 2011, 08:36:22 PM »
This must have been raised before, or at least passed through a lot of members' heads but here goes anyway.
I admit to being mentally ill, I have three Italian bikes to just the one Honda if you wanted proof. But I must be getting worse as I keep pondering about buying one of the Benelli 750/6 things. Yes, the ones with the dodgy gearboxes, that weigh too much, that are as much in fashion as flares and stack heels, but what the heck.
Anyway - while De Tomaso pretended it wasn't really a rip off of the 500/4 with 50% nailed on the end, we all know it was - right down to the bore and stroke as I recall. So in the possible event of me actually remaining mad for so long that I acquire one, does anyone know for sure which if any parts are a straight swop? Oil filters spring to mind as a possibility, but what about stuff like valves, pistons, wheel bearings, points, exhaust gaskets etc? All info gratefully received.

CB750 / Camshaft - hot, cold or otherwise?
« on: December 11, 2010, 10:48:01 PM »
Happy festive season all. The time of year when what little money I have is spent on the unaffordable to give to the ungrateful, instead of investing it in motorcycle spares. But, one part which doesn't appear to need renewing is the camshaft on the K4 engine, but I wonder if anyone can give a definitive answer as to whether it is stock Honda or not. It has the characters R10 stamped on it which some say indicates a Yoshimura cam, and has what looks to me like a fairly steep drop on the cam lobe, but again others say is pretty normal.
I am not very bothered either way as long as it opens and closes the valves at the right moment when it is all together, but it might be worth knowing for carburettor purposes if nothing else.
So below is a sort of 'end on' pic to show the lobe profile as far as I can. All info and guesses gratefully received.

CB750 / How not to remove a cylinder head
« on: November 30, 2010, 11:05:13 PM »
See the pics - not me, but what the bead blasting has revealed. The moral of the story is to undo ALL bolts and nuts before using a crowbar to remove the head. Good news is that Pete Lovell in Smethwick should be able to do the necessary welding (he hasn't seen the job yet but I trust him!) and then it can all be vapour blasted to look nice and shiny. Anyway, look at the pics and weep!

CB750 / Headstock dimensions please
« on: November 06, 2010, 11:10:47 PM »
Can anyone with a CB750 K2 or thereabouts do me a huge favour and measure the distance from top to bottom of the headstock please? That is to say the distance between the top and bottom yokes effectively - my Foale frame has a distance of 190mm according to my cheap tape measure - is this standard?
Reason I ask is the bottom yoke on mine is joined to the top yoke by a length of steel rod, and the top yoke has a sawn off bit of threaded metal from the original rod bolted into it.
Equally, anyone got a bottom yoke for sale?
Thanks in advance.
