I know that when Les Emery at Norvil stamps up a frame plate he insists on seeing the bike and the logbook to be 100% certain it is above board.
I know this because he did one for mine.
I can't think of how any specific offence would be tied to simple sale of a frame plate, unless it didn't relate to the bike for which supplied in which case you could be open to several aid and abets, and possibly conspiracy if you were shown to be dishonest in what you were selling.
While it is great to think that you can get any spares for any bike, I think as a supplier of these parts you could easily get taken for a ride by the less scrupulous, so in many ways it is a bit naive just to bang them out over ebay. More 'caveat vendor' than 'caveat emptor' I suppose.
(I knew that Latin A Level would come in handy one day, even if I did only get an 'E'!)

More like the retarded doll! That one is truly scary. I can only think they made it fire retardant as they guessed what most people would want to do to it.

Anyway you know what they say about marriage - it is like a pack of cards. At the start you just need two hearts and a diamond. A few years down the line you end up wanting a club and a spade.

At least the postage stamps will look pretty!

Love the way these threads stray just a few degrees off subject occasionally. Proves that anoraks are not compulsory but a sense of humour is! Anyway my project is boxed up and parked at the moment due to insufficient funds - it will move on again before long I hope, but not until there is enough to get it to a next decent level. So I will post again when it next moves a bit - just that the next stage will be quite pricey as a lot of threads have to be drawn together. Such is life, but it isn't going to sit under a tarp for the next 15 years like it did before I bought it!

thanks folks - all uiseful and all gratefully received. I am being very patient at the moment and am just getting barrels and head (castings) properly checked and sorted to see if they are salvageable, and only then will I move on to valves, cams pistons etc. I could also do with an ambient temperature which doesn't threaten to freeze treasured bits of my anatomy off my body. I'm sure that applies to all of us who don't have heated garages.
So any more info will be received with interest, but updates and the like on progress will be a little slow in arriving. But have patience, they will get there.
Happy Christmas one and all by the way!

The thot plickens as they say...
You must bear in mind that the CB750 I have was bought principally for the Foale frame, and the engine is a complete unknown. The guy I bought it off had no idea of its history, having been given it in return for money owed. The engine had (by repute and folklore only) got a Yoshimura big bore and a close ration gearbox. Neither the seller or I had any great faith in this. So, on stripdown, I found a set of 810cc pistons, but made by Henry Abe not Yoshi, and the wheels turned out to be Abe ones as well. I use the name Henry Abe in that rather casual way to sound like I know how famous he just has to be - in reality I'd never heard of him until I bought this bike, and my teenage years were spent slobbering over Honda 4s and other stuff of the 70s!
So whether it ha a close ratio gearbox or not has yet to be discovered. Frankly I'm not holding my breath, but you never know.
However any other info on the cam will be gratefully received - are you saying this is an F2 cam sprocket beyond any doubt? If so it adds intrigue to the setup, but once again it is all out of curiosity not vain hope. I'd be just as happy if it was all bog standard!

Thanks for that - just in case it helps with I.D. I will attach below photos of the only identifying marks on the cam. R10 looks to be stamped in and the others look cast.

As I say, it is more out of curiosity and I will find how it behaves whenever it gets reassembled. Just hope it won't take too long!

It could easily have been resprayed in 38 years so the mention of green colour isn't something I would worry about, but a missing front end is cause for concern re the frame as you say. It is a bit like falling for a girl and knowing she likes boiling rabbits, but somehow you just want to see her anyway.
You could always buy a Rickman frame....

Good luck!

Happy festive season all. The time of year when what little money I have is spent on the unaffordable to give to the ungrateful, instead of investing it in motorcycle spares. But, one part which doesn't appear to need renewing is the camshaft on the K4 engine, but I wonder if anyone can give a definitive answer as to whether it is stock Honda or not. It has the characters R10 stamped on it which some say indicates a Yoshimura cam, and has what looks to me like a fairly steep drop on the cam lobe, but again others say is pretty normal.
I am not very bothered either way as long as it opens and closes the valves at the right moment when it is all together, but it might be worth knowing for carburettor purposes if nothing else.
So below is a sort of 'end on' pic to show the lobe profile as far as I can. All info and guesses gratefully received.

It's tempting - I am on my first CB rebuild so please don't think of me as an expert (unless you go for the definition of an expert that 'an ex is a has-been and a spurt is a drip under pressure').
My last three restorations have been 2 Guzzi Le Mans and a Jota, so the CB has more bits but they're smaller, but can't be more expensive than Laverda bits!!
The one on ebay looks tempting as it is an early one and all the big bits look to be there. The worry is if it is 70% complete, what makes up the missing 30%, and how much would the bits either cost to get, or how long would they take to locate? I just bought a points cover and a starter cover for mine and it wasn't cheap, and on top of that I have to do a full engine rebuild, powder coating, chroming, forks etc etc. I would probably talk myself into it but try the seller with a cash bid a bit below the 950 asking price.

I bought a CB500/4 in 1980 about 3 months before I actually did my test, got a mate to ride it from the dealer to home, then let him ride it to Edinburgh and back with me on the back. In January. It is the only time I have had one of my eyes freeze shut. Oddly I remember enjoying the trip too, and with only the kit that student finances would allow - AGV polycaronate helmet, no earplugs, knitted sweater and leather jacket with thin nylon oversuit. Now I have heated jacket, heated gloves and a fairing. But the ultimate winter clothing for an old fart like me is a car. Roll on spring, or at least temperatures which allow me to work on the project in the garage! I jealously salute the ones who keep riding in this weather, but am equally happy to wimp out!

Osprey and motorcycle stuff rang a bell with me, but I have had a good look myself and they only seem to do military books. I could suggest my own work as featured below, but as the title suggests it doesn't have much to do with motorcycles! (Well there is one bike in it, but that's all)
And as soon as the garage is above freezing for more than a few hours I'm going to tear the CB engine to bits. I am getting restoration withdrawal!

Replying in vague order - yes it is the Pete Lovell who does Norvil work. I had a Commando for 26 years and would trust anyone Les Emery uses for quality work.
Will keep everyone posted on cost etc for sure.
A new set of barrels is a possibility - depends on cost of fin repair and if the old pistons are useable, as an expensive fin job and a rebore would make new barrels more economic potentially. Could also consider grinding some of the fns back, but a black finish on the barrels is also more likely as it hides a multitude of imperfections.
My wife wears black a lot.....
