CB500/550 / Rocker shafts
« on: May 30, 2020, 09:26:07 AM »
Hi
Can anyone confirm that I have fitted my Rocker shafts correctly.
I have fitted both the inner and outer shafts with the threaded ends of the shafts facing outwards towards the end caps, is this correct.
Thanks in advance for any replies

It was working and happened when I gave it a 1/4 turn clockwise to take the tension off the chain to fit camshaft and sprocket when I tightened the locknut it must have turned it a bit more and damaged the end tooth which meant when the locknut was released it didn't spring back and tension the chain.
Took it off and straightened tooth and it's working again going to refit and see what happens

Should have checked it before I fitted it but all is not lost there is only one tooth damaged and a friend has said he can repair it by putting some weld where tooth has come off and shape a tooth by filing.
Nothing to lose by trying !

Has anyone got a cam chain tensioner for a 1976 550 for sale.
Fitted a new blade to mine but adjuster bolt is jammed I have stripped tensioner down and the teeth are knackered on the end of the bolt

Hi
Took Oddjobs advice and removed the sump and sure enough I had missed the slot in the bottom of the engine and had jammed the bottom of the tensioner between the case and the starter clutch.
I'm really grateful for all of the advice that Oddjob and others have given me it has been invaluable
Many thanks

I'm pretty sure that it is seated properly at the bottom but I haven't torqued the head down yet because I wasn't happy with the tensioner so I am going to take the head back off and check that it is seated correctly at the bottom.

I've used a flat washer should it be a hollow crush washer

Hi
The parts diagram specifies a 22mm M6 flange bolt I have used a 20mm M6 flange bolt with an aluminium washer.
If I bolt it right home it seems to be pulling the tensioner backwards

Hi
Just built up the cylinder and head and I'm not sure how far to tighten the top tensioner bolt.
If I bolt it fully up it seems to be slightly bending the tensioner and it stops the tensioner screw from springing back when the locknut is slacked off.
If I turn back the top bolt a little the tensioner bolt works as it should .
I have left it like this and used loctite will this be ok.
Thanks
