Out & About / Re: OUT AND ABOUT 2024
« on: Today at 01:12:13 PM »
For the last two evenings I have had a few hours fishing at a local man made Lake that I only discovered by pure serendipity  about five years ago.

My BiL (Dave) told me the story behind a Pike that was on the wall of a pub in Tutbury in a glass frame for many decades. It transpired that a local lad who was a glass cutter at the Webb Corbett Factory (now flats) caught the Pike when out poaching with Dave one night in a brook near Hilton where there was a small pool caused by an old works dam. Circa 1968-70)

The lad Neil Wheal (sadly deceased) was also an amateur Taxidermist hence the Pike on display in the pub as he was at one time associated with a barmaid at the pub a stones throw from the old glassworks.

As I grew up close to this area I wanted to find out where this pool was as I only knew the Brook as it used to flood part of Hilton every few decades. I went onto Google Maps/Satelite and found this huge lake that you cannot see from any nearby roads except possibly from the newish (30 yrs?) A50 By-Pass.

I drove out to where I thought the Lake was circa 2019, the access road was gated with a lock & chain. I climbed the gate and walked about a fifth of a mile down the road to reach a lafge notice board that gave details of the fishing club that owned the Lake.

I duly paid my £35 a year membership I am now in my fourth year as a member - the price went up to £40 for 2024/5. It transpires that when they were building the A50 the Contractors dug out free gravel for use in the road construction. In the 1950/60s there were a number of Gravel Works in the Hilton Area with a nearby Concrete Works.

What was left behind after the A50 was completed were a few houses that were in the end not demolished but sold off leaving this one area of about 4 or 5 Acres of land with a big hole in it full of construction debris. A  couple of blokes from the Derby Area bought the plot and in a couple of years it became a private fishing club.

The place is full of wild life plus I saw my first ever Red Kite flying overhead a few years ago - probably out on a day trip from further north.

PS Could not load all my fishing tackle on the 400 so went in the car - does this qualify for Out & About. ;D ;D ;D

Brake pressure switch?

It's probably  between my ears rather than reality - when I did my rectification fit of the right bearing instead of using my lump hammer as previously to get it fully home -  I used my Orange Plastic shot filled hammer for the final strike - thinking it might stop a rebound.

Well spotted Ozzybud  I did not realise they come out!

Knowing your luck Roo it will be the last one you check that's missing!

Yes they are already painted in gloss Black in safe storage - done by the bloke in Ilkeston who was recommended to me by a sohc member (Seaman Phil?).

No petrol tap or filler cap fitted as yet - I have a tap kit & new filler cap to fit.
All the big ticket items purchased just some minor oddments for the final fettle.

Thanks Johnny I'm pleased with the build so far. I just hope the engine  starts & runs as my 400 does. It's my forever bike so not worried that it cost around £2k more to rebuild than my 400. I've pretty much bought all my parts to finish the project.

Never say never but this is probably my last project. I'm keeping my first born - my 400,  between the two I should always have a runner as long as I'm able to ride a bike.

Might not be a 0.22 how about a 0.177.🤔🤔🤔

I had no issues Mike  when I did my 400 rear wheel so I was well miffed when the 500 did not work out first fit.

After chatting to Ken on reflection I obviously did not fit the right side bearing fully home. The 500 has that short extra spacer that fits into the left bearing as well as the long center spacer. Make sure you fit the short spacer fully home  into the fixed left side bearing before you fit it.

It's different but the same in some aspects as the old Mini Cooper S had taper roller bearings in the front hubs that were not adjustable you just torqued them up. The other Minis all  had plain ball bearings.

10
Just keeping the project progress up to date - sorted out the wheel binding when I tightened up the axle nut - turned out to be a combination of the right wheel bearing not being knocked in fully home plus some brake shoe binding as per my 500 advice sought post on wheel binding.

Rear wheel now fitted, chain fitted together with rear brake rod / adjuster and hub bar thingy. Now the bike has two wheels fitted I need to remove the center scissor stand and torque up the sump and various other bits like the front wheel clamps.

I have a list of items to check for tightness and add my yellow dots when done. My plan is to start fitting the exhuast system in the next couple of weeks.

Photo of bike to date.

Updated:-

Or a bean counter. ;D ;D ;D

Ted, you have just completed something a younger mechanic would fail at mate.
By the way the chain whilst new was not an expensive one

It's marked DID on the links so I'm happy with it to go back on - it's not going to see much mileage in my ownership.

My target date was to have it running for my birthday - I've missed that by two days already. As I have my 400 to use I'm in no hurry to get it finished this month - it's still not very warm in my garage either.

That's a real pain - at least you have found the issue.

My chain was replaced and was ittle used when I purchased the 500 from Bryan.
I have removed the light surface rust, after cleaning I have sprayed it with some chain lubricant that I have on my shelf it's a black coloured foam type grease called "IZUMI" Racing Japan that was given to me.

I have read online about a product called Putoline Chain Wax - not cheap but it sounds a neat idea to heat it up so the lubricant fully penetrates the rollers etc.

What do members here recommend as a good lubricant?

I was quite pleased with my Flap Wheel that I bought from Scewfix - trouble is it will not fit in the gap between the hub brake lining and the center of the hub - I'm sure it will come in handy in the future!

Undetered I decided to use a pair of those  dark green plastic wheels that Ken uses for polishing work. A steady five minutes with them in my Dremell,  the brake liner cleaned up really nicely. Hub fitted back in the wheel,  nipped up,  a couple of high point rub marks on the brake lining near the middle towards the edge of one brake shoe. Hub removed some sand paper on the high points, Repeated twice - all is now as it should be - wheel rotates freely at last!

I've lost count of how many times the back wheel has been removed and re-fitted over the last two days - it was worth perservering to get it right.
Thanks for the tips from those who replied to this post.

Thank goodness for my bike ramp it made it all so much easier - time for a Beer reward!
