Ewan, that is more than 3 inch.

oh oki doki  ;) ... micrometer ooooot ..... shortest distance between electrisc tray and tyre when on side stand is 3.425 inch, when sitting up right without stands its 3.35 inch. For woodside .... got longer rear shocks which is causing the front end prob !  Need the longer shocks to restore clearance at back end. Still got the tarzzi brackets and rods ...

.. and the whole bike. Bit of an issue with high speed front end wobblies to sort out.... preferably by finding someone who can manufacture a custom yoke set

here you go ... photo of tarozzi's from disco volante fitted. ... bearing in mind that I didnt use the standard mounting brackets or connecting rods. The standard tarozzi mounts use the main frame tubes rather than the rear passenger peg mounts and place the rearsets a lot more forward

Ewan, 3 inch's? Are you on about 3 inch between the tyre and the frame? Because you must take on board that you have got rid of the inner mudguard, which is 3 inch's in. I am not sure how Norniron has got away with this loss of clearance but, he did something right.

Standard set up has about 3 inch clearance between tyre and inner face of rear mudguard, so I reckoned i Needed 3 inch between tyre and bottom of electric tray that is welded on bottom of frame where the seat sits ..... no mudguard fitted

Ewan, it would be much easier to just get some new rear shocks. I have looked at the maths on this and had a few off line chats with Norniron. You have the rear end too high.
aye you could be right trig, but felt I needed the rear end clearance cue to electrics tray, current shocks give 3 inch clearance betwee tyre and electric tray ... about same as original

High speeds ewan?
Why would you want to go faster than 70mph on these old yocks?

yeah !!  .. otherwise I'd ride a CD  or a triumph herald  ::).. and there's a bit of moped mayem history to honour

so, its hard to sort out the wheat from the chaff.  The merchants of doom have been proved right in opinions that riasing the rear end by 46mm would give me the front end wobbly at high speeds. Anyone know anyone who could engineer me a new front yoke set ..... reduced offset to 35mm and extended steering stop, but otherwise same as 500 one including top yoke steering stem  hole being higher by standard amount than the fork tube holes. Been saving for a bit.................

CB500/550 / Re: swopping CB500 yokes for NSR125 ones

I have an ns125r in the shed - wonder how close this would be? I know phisically a cb250 or 400 front end of the superdream era slot streight in too.

Got this on the US site: " I'm in the process of organizing a set of these for another forum member. Because the NSR top clamp is flat & not "dropped" like the original the forks need to slide through the lower clamp enough to sit flush with the top of the upper. This ultimately brings the top of the fork leg closer to the bottom of the lower clamp reducing available travel. I need to play some more but may mean longer tubes or else the front of the frame will be lower. This might be ok except if there is already a change to an 18" wheel as well as longer rear shocks. If this is the case longer forks or tubes may be the answer, otherwise too great a change in rake & loss of trail will result even with 10mm less offset.

The OD of the steering stem where the lower bearing sits is smaller than the original so in order to use tapered roller bearings for a Honda it will be necessary to machine a sleeve for that lower brg".

I've just started looking at this so I have no final advice yet. Otherwise the fork spacing & diameter of these triples is correct.looks a lot more complicated that a straight swop or simple mod of steering stem ! Cb250/400 solutoion probs not an option given the £'s alreay laid out on wheel and brake refurbs. Now think a one off CNC billet job might need to be the answer ... though that would take a fair bit of saving for

Ewan, because you have jacked the back end up you need to stiffen the front end. You could try a couple of washers in the forks to tighten up the springs a bit. This is the cheapest option. Do you still have the old springs in?
Hi Trig, yep its still the old springs that are in. I was warned that raising the back end that much would give it front end tank slapping tendancies .. which is why I fitted the damper,. I suppose if I hadnt fitted the damper and run it on max damping, this mornings twitchy front end might have been a bit more violent.

Do you reckon that stiffening the front foks would help get rid of twitching tendancies ?

Looks like the NSR yokes might be a far from simple solution. I'll maybe have a  look into billet yokes with a 10mm reduction in offset to 35mm, which should bring my trail back up to about 4 inches.

Love the exhausts apart from the blueing. Not keen on cafes but I like the look of yours
Well done
Bitsa

Thanks Bitsa... now if it didnt have a twitchy front end, didn't chuck oil out and rune lean as twiggy the doin would match the lookin ... i can see another 12 months of refinment at this rate.

So u were doin 90mph with no front brakes? Or did i read that wrong

ye well, ye know. Cant say its clever, cant say it big . Tempation to get it on the road after firing it up for the first time in a few years was tempation too far. I know the road like the back of my hand. . Promise not to do it again Dad  :-[

Ewan,  just read your NSR125  thread and looked at you pic,

I noticed you don't have a right-hand side caliper??

 any issues about that ?

:) ... if you'd seen the other side you'd know that there is no caliper on the left hand side either ...front brakes arent on yet, as waiting for some fasteners to join the front mudguard to its stay properly first. So.. only issue is stopping. Gotta say the oil leak, the twitchy front end ... and difficulty in getting it to idle has really disheartened me this weekend. Also looks like its running pretty lean too. I keep thinking I'm nearly there .............the fool that I am.

CB500/550 / swopping CB500 yokes for NSR125 ones
« on: June 15, 2014, 06:49:54 PM »
so...in building my cafe racer I increased the rear forks by 46mm (nearly 2 inches) ... On a test ride today I was getting a front end side to side twitch at 90mph, despite having a steering damper on and with it set at full damping. So, I need Triple T set with less offset to compensaet for the reduced trail caused by raising the rear end. I understand that the NSR125 triple T would do the the job ... can anyone offer any advice on what is involved in this modification ?
