Hi,
popped into the local chroming place I have used before to get a price for chroming the front mudguard. They quoted me £400 and they even smiled as they said it. I did check it was chrome and not gold plated!
That's ridiculous, I can only assume they are pricing me out.
Looks like a repo one for me. Any good places to get one?

Chroming prices are going through the roof Heath. I think it will be a lot worse in the near future when the new Regs come in that many can't afford, or be arsed, to comply with.
-
It's an unpleasant game to be in, i was the chemist on a plating line and even with prices going up due to regs, health and safety, disposal of by products and associated waste it's still worth every penny.
-
My chainguard re-chroming cost me £150 just before Christmas 2021 at the time of pricing he priced just under the cost of an aftermarket replacement after a haggle.
I assume now with the higher energy costs it will just get even more expensive.
-
My chromer who I have used for 30+ years gas been forced to stop due to environmental issues. He only does zinc plating now.

I was looking to rechrome all the shiny bits on my 400F. The quote was well over £1,000!
After much soul searching, I decided that since I wasn't going for perfection, I would get everything powder coated instead. The cost for all the (ex)shiny stuff and the black stuff was a mere(!) £400.

Maybe not for the purist, but good enough to ride.

Bit unfortunate the cost of plating these days! Interesting to see the bike with powder coated parts! Nice work on the cleaning up of cruddy parts.
-
Hi, not a purist either but i had some chroming done a few years ago, the front mudguard needs to be chromed but I'll end buying are repo. The chain guard is going to have to be powder coated. Pity

Aftermarket mudguards seem to be out of stock everywhere. I’m looking for a rear if you find any.

So chrome may become a thing of the past on even new machinery? :( On the other hand, could a new market for re-chroming emerge abroad? I don't know how international these new regs are.
-
There’s been no chrome on any of my recent bikes.

That's ok Steve, my 500 will make up for your lack of chrome
-
Whilst its nice to have shiny bits on the bikes and I do prefer that, with 10 bikes I have gotten used to some bikes needing cosmetic attention but are in good mechanical condition and running fine.
Producing a "show queen" is going to cost a fortune. Its is a shame that its cheaper to get a repo item rather that repair/re-chrome the original. I doubt that will change in the future either.
-
well I bought a repo front mudguard. Looks ok, bit of a bugger to fit as the stays seem to be a bit too long.

Slacken off the top screws, the 2 pairs on the outside of the guard, you should then find it goes on OK.
