Looking at Ken's thread on disc brake material, I was doing a little digging in such topic and came across this on the .net Honda forum http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=109502.0 :o :o :o ;D

The original braking is stainless steel disc up front which can be described as pull lever on Sunday and stop on Monday, drum rear which was adequate. My concern would be in changing to a rear disc set up is that the rear would be more efficient than the front leading to tail happy slithering all over the road retardation. If going for this expensive option I would expect a change of front disc of equal efficiency to complement the rear one
Unless of course hairy braking is your forte!

You say the braking is apply Sunday stop Monday but you obiously never road tested a Ural (Dneiper) where road tests of the day quoted stopping distance from 30 as the horizon and from 60, if you got it to go that fast as 14 miles past the horizon, yet they made efficiency on mot

Ah post 12, SoyBoySigh. Quite a character and his post were always looooong. Passed away aged 45 in 2018.

I think this idea is the ultimate front brake for an old school cafe racer. A CBX front disc/caliper with a spoked wheel to give a drum look but with the efficiency of a double disc. l wanted to fit one to my Triton build but alas the brake was a one-off. I think it would cost an absolute fortune to make with all the mods and polishing involved. Great piece of engineering though.

..in two minds wrt this Dave; as I get older I’m shying away more and more from complexity, the advantages rarely seem to outweigh the outright pain of cost and bloody maintenances. If you can make something work with 2 or 3 moving parts, why would you want to do it with 20? 😂.
Great engineering to me now infers ingenuity and lateral thinking simplicity.

Can’t say I’ve ever ridden a a Ural, but worked on plenty of Lara’s, Moskvich’s and concluded Russian stopping was more to do with bumping into something to aid retardation than actually braking.
