Can anyone confirm if it's possible to change the starter reduction gear without splitting the cases? (400/4). I don’t think it can but a customer of mine insists it can be done by just removing the sump, having never tried to do it this way I'm only 99% sure it can't but appreciate any comments
Cheers Daz

Depends if there is room to get the shaft out and how mechanical your pet spider is
-
If it is possible, a course in Practical Gynaecology is a baseline - I would imagine taking the engine out & inverting it would be the operating position.
Begs the question why does it need replacement and where have the missing metal parts gone if its worn?

He reckons it can be done without removing the engine, so not only do you have to be a contortionist you now have to do the job lying on your back. :o :D

If he knows so much about it, why isn't he doing it himself 🤣😏🤣🤣

Maybe this helps - or shows the way. Attention, it is a 550:

Personally I wouldn't like to go this route. Shure you can wallpaper the entrance through the letterbox but who want's that?

Thanks for that, is the 550 engine similar to the 400 apart from the cc ?

I am pretty sure the sump on a 400 is smaller in terms of length & width so the aperture you are working in will be smaller as a result.
IIRC the 400 sump is a tad deeper.

I wish him luck ;D
