Title: It’s arrived. At least most of it has...
Post by: Sesman on January 10, 2021, 10:46:32 AM
Just thought I’d share some January misery and ‘show case’ my classic HOS.

Julie, I’ll be in touch shortly if and when I can extract those carbs.

Happy New Year to all.

Looks like good project,  exciting to get something new to work on isn't it.

You'll have your work cut out with that old gummy fuel residue.

Good luck with the project Phil.  I see in one of the photos you have a bottle of fizz on the garage floor available for when things start to get annoying?

 Excellent planning mate!

That was the second bottle.... ;)

Yes, a US import with Title deeds.

Carbs are indeed going to be tough. I can’t extract any of the jets or float pins. The set is currently resting nicely in a bath of carb cleaner.

Do yourself a favour - get a 5L can of pure acetone from one of the many suppliers on eBay. That used with a stiff paint brush will def help get rid of the gunge. It’s the only thing I’ve found that will effectively shift it. You can also soak the float bowls in it...

Lol
Obviously. And wear gloves (unless you want your nail varnish to be easily removed).

I found fresh petrol is as effective as Acetone but it does take a little longer to work. Three out of the four carbs on my 400/4 were seized solid. Most of the sliders came free after 24 hours or less - one took a couple of days. I just sealed them in a Tupperware Box with some new petrol - if it looked dirty I changed it for fresh.

The pro's use Methylene Chloride but of course that's pretty nasty so not readily available these days.

Thanks everybody, I’ll try petrol first then move on if it doesn’t succeed. The slow/idle jet has already disintegrated in one carb, so taking it slowly from this point on. All other aspects of the carbs are in great nick, accept for the link bar, which is very corroded.

You can still get your hands on methylene chloride (dichloromethane) but have to declare it's for professional use.

Seaman - same for me with the link bar. I have two sets of carbs with both having badly worn and corroded link bar. Not sure how I will get these sorted yet but any ideas welcome

Hi, Cantarauk.

If I can work out how to separate the bar from the hinge posts I’ll polish the feck out of it then have if zinced. Failing that I’ll get my hands on some s/s bar and take it from there.

Just need some tips on dismantling.

Thanks, Oddjob.

The end float was suggesting as much, but thanks for the insight. I’ll have a pop tomorrow. 7 days soaking in petrol and still no sign of the float pins moving...will engage in some autopunch action tomorrow with a post spacer and wire support to prevent the posts breaking...maybe.

Cheers

Apologies, Tigger. Just noticed your Jan 17 post.

I’ve done a number of searches using various clues, but haven’t come up with your photos. Could you send me to the relevant item please.

Thanks in anticipation.

From this to this. 25 mins at 55degs in Ultrasonic bath using 30% concentration of Allendales’ best brew. Also the stubborn float pins virtually fell out!

Thanks to Ashimoto and Charlie J et al.

Wow, wasn’t expecting that, but very much appreciated. Will reimburse accordingly.

Oh, and carb finishing stuff I purchased from you...O rings, new screws an all. Makes the difference I think.

Also, s/arm bushes have arrived and have been  fitted. I thought the originals were fine... I was wrong. All good now, though.

Cheers Julie.
