Misc / Open / Sump gasket...what to think?
« Last post by Athame57 on Today at 11:43:23 AM »
I ordered a sump gasket for my CB400F2 as seen here: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/363126431330
What arrived today in the post.... see the image. Doesn't look quite the same to me :-\  Does the blue on the Interface gasket peel off or something? I'm doubtful I've got what I ordered. I'm not sure if I would need a sealant to use this one. Can anyone offer peace of mind or the opposite?

Looks promising Johnny,  I've tried calling them today right from opening time to now ten times, only ever engaged which makes me think they jus have the phone off the hook.  On that basis on definitely ordering elsewhere

Thanks Flat four I’m going to have to keep an eye on that oil level! Looking into joining the BMW club. As always now there are some superb video tutorials on you tube an absolute god send and I’ve already stripped the bike and figured out what tools I need - virtually 👍

Did you sell the original pipes off it on FB Julie? Seemed like a good deal to me.

'All gone now'
Anyone would think they have died Julie!  :( See them as daughters that have flown the nest, I'm sure they have gone to good homes.  ;)
Meanwhile six still at home between two of you sounds manageable!  8)
My own mechanical mistress has got me all to herself!  ;D

CB500/550 / Re: 1975 CB500K1 crank rotation resistance

Does the crank have that free movement feel if you make a very small rocking action with the crank?

Do you have any doubts that the crankcase halves were a factory pair?

CB500/550 / 1975 CB500K1 crank rotation resistance
« Last post by martin_uk on Today at 10:10:56 AM »
Im in the process of reassembling the engine on my 75 CB500K1 basket case that came already stripped.

Crankshaft checked for wear which was minor and well within spec.

Minor marks to crank main shells on 1 and 5 but replaced with new genuine Honda Green shells in line with calculations of housing and journal.

Checked with Plastiguage and all mains came out at 2 thou.

Reassembled with top case down and inserting primary shaft after cases together.

Bearings well oiled and fitted evenly.

Cases closed up easily with light taps with rubber mallet and gradually torqued up as per recommended order but on final torque crank becomes more difficult to turn.

It turns with a spanner on the alternator bolt but feels tighter to turn than I would expect.

I have rebuilt 3 CB750 enfines without this issue.

I have just checked and force required to turn crank is 9 lb ft.

Removed primary shaft and does not change.

Would be interested to hear if any similar issues .

Thanks

Martin

Misc / Open / Re: Advice sought, modernish tourer needed

Did you ever find a tourer? I was idly surfing and saw TBR Motorcycles in Notts have both a VFR800 and a Sprint, both with hard luggage. Might be one you could compare if not too far away ( but aren't you in Somerset..!).. (Nb they advertise a Hornet for 2.5k but it's about 1.3k on eBay, so could have flexibility on pricing.

I have found a very low mileage Triumph Daytona but I need to sell my 500/4 to be able to afford it.  Luckily the owner is not in a hurry to sell.  Just need to raise 1500 and then good to go.  I've had my bike since 1995, I bought it for cheap motorcycle holidays, feel ready for a change.
