Interchangeability / Re: Brake disc swap CB550F ---> CB750 K7
« on: December 12, 2010, 12:06:11 AM »
Thanks Yoshi823,, worth knowing.

Having been told by Len Cooper engineering that the brake conversion would be done in 3 weeks, my brake disc should actually be back with me next week...maybe. That'd be nearly 2 months after it was received by them.

Seriously..not a happy bunny right now. If it was going to take two months I'd have appreciated being told that at the beginning.

Interchangeability / Brake disc swap CB550F ---> CB750 K7
« on: November 28, 2010, 09:55:06 AM »
Anyone know if this is a straight swap ? I've sent my K7's disc off to Len Cooper to have a cast iron disc fitted and it's already a week overdue with no sign of it being done. I want to ride my flipping bike!!
 I can get hold of one off a CB550F, part numbers are different but I'm not sure if that means it wouldn't fit at all or that the carrier is painted a different colour!

Thanks in advance,..

Has a previous owner installed a hidden cut-out switch somewhere perhaps ?

In your situation I would 'follow the juice' using a voltmeter or simple test light (a bulb with a wire soldered to the body and another to the pip on the bottom.)
As BryanJ said, I'd start at the wire that takes power into the ignition switch, see if there's power there and if there isn't go back to the battery and follow the power towards the switch, testing for current at each connector.

Whereabouts are you ? Perhaps a fellow board member is nearby and can help.

I've just removed the front disc from my K7 to send off to CAT engineering to have it converted to cast iron.

Firstly, it weighs over 3Kg - literally off my kitchen scale! I put the discless wheel back on the bike, wheeled the bike under cover and the whole thing feels noticeably lighter.

My question is, what is the ideal brake pad material to use with cast iron discs? Is it a trade-off? I.e, sintered pads will brake better but wear the disc faster ?

Screw removal tip no.2. The screws used on old Hondas have JIS heads (Japanese Industry Standard) and are slightly different from Phillips heads. Either get correct JIS screwdrivers or use the heads of far east impact drivers; which tend to be JIS.

Nice one Simon, you done well to turn around the problem so quick and fix it , if that were me i probably would have let it sit there for a while and got all depressed about it, your rewards are deserved.
Pete

 Hehe  +1

 Are you noticing any difference in performance due to the skimming ?

That's lovely Florence, you just don't see enough bikes in that condition nowadays.

Off-topic but here's my MZ which I bought in similar condition. People come up to me and ask if I'll be restoring it and I just smile and shake my head. T&Ted, used whenever the CB750 K7 is in dry dock (not often).

That's insane! Do you know which edition of the magazine ?

I set the tappets when I first bought it 350 miles ago, could they cause these symptoms?

Sure could. If they're too tight then at higher revs either the inlet or exhaust valves might not be closing completely - causing lack of compression.

Worth checking, supposing there was a spot of carbon on one of the valve seats last time you checked them, giving a false reading ? How long will it take, 30 minutes ? How long have you spent on it already ?

And yes, valve clearances close with wear, and camshafts do flex.

I thought I'd throw my 2d in here. I had a Honda '89 CB900F a while back, lovely bike, ran beautifully except for an annoying 'stumble' at 3000 rpm. After reading up a bit on it I bought a pair of green 3ohm coils from Z1enterprises. They worked out considerably cheaper than buying the same coils from a UK seller, arrived really quickly and were well packed.
Fitted them, fired it up. Those big, fat juicy sparks were doing such a good job that it was idling 1000 rpm higher than with the old coils. Took it for a spin and it was like a new bike. Much smoother, better pick-up and more powerful all through the rev range. And the stumble had gone completely. Major result.

Those old coils were from 1989 and had clearly either deteriorated or were just plain inferior to the Dynas, I'd thoroughly recommend them and am only waiting for a better exchange rate before getting a pair of the black 5 ohm coils for my K7.

Lovely looking bike that Sfbrain, apart from the seat.  I've always fancied a 750.  Good luck with the restoration.

Yeah, I noticed the seat too..are you sure there's not a family of asylum seekers in there ?   :-\
