I'm still awaiting parts deleveries from several sources so before I can assemble my gearbox etc I have been doing odd jobs on the frame. I'm stuck on the rear forks until my Brass bushes arrive from NJ so did a bit more on the front end. As I slid the fork tubes in place it struck me that they do not have what I would call a fixed stop location - they fit into the upper & lower part of the front steering system with what is basically an upper & lower clamp holding them in position.
Back in the 1960's I used to ride my 250 Dream off road in an old Quarry near Matlock with my mate on his Triumph Twenty One - it was what at the time we thought was great fun on a Sunday afternoon. Despite working the forks quite hard it never occured to me that the upper fork tube could be moved by the excess battering they were getting. Okay you have the give of the suspension to absorb the shock but........
So why do the upper part of the forks not move within the clamped zone if you hit a pot hole?
