Title: 1st Decent run on the k1
Post by: UK Pete on May 11, 2010, 05:02:59 PM
When i went up to boxhill on sunday, i took my sat nav so i could check the speedo accuracy, the sat nav said 70mph the k1 speedo said 69, you cant say better than that for an old bike, anyway the reason for this post is i thought i would say how well the bike was on the motorway, on the way there i held it at a constant 70 mph for about 25 miles, then on the way back i held it at 80mph, even taking it up to 90 on short blasts, my milage for that day was 75 miles, the bike was faultless and a real pleasure to ride this was the longest ride on the bike since i bought it and it filled me with confidence for some more trips out on it, i was only really going to ride this bike a few hundred miles per year , but i may well clock up a thousand or two as it rides so well, i am however going to replace the front tyre i got a slating off from some other riders at the hill, they were comenting on the state of my tyres and how the front still looked like the original,
i think i best get them changed, Has any one got any suggestions as to a suitable tyre for this bike?

If you want the classic look, you should go for one of the "retro" ribbed front tyres.

If however, you are interested in grip, handling and wear, go for a modern compound like the Avon Roadrunner.

I have the Avon roadriders on my F2 ( which is still being built) but they look to modern for the K1, I will have a look at the roadrunners and see how they look

You could try Dunlop TT100'S for the period look  ;)

I wouldn't get anything too soft as the tyre might go off if not used regularly. I've just been riding the Exup & i'm sure that the wooden feeling isn't right. I have a spare set of wheels with other tyres on them so I might try the rear first & see how that feels before consigning what looks like a perfectly good tyre to the scrap heap. Similarly, as far as Peter's K1 is concerned, one persons cast offs are anothers gold mine, so if anybody wanted a part worn set which are only needed to make the bike look OEM, they may well be suitable.

Years ago I took along some part worn tyres to the Festival of 1000 Bikes at Brands Hatch & set them up alongside a table selling off bits & pieces. I got quite a few bob for a tyre that had done 2 Assen WSB & 2 Bol d'Ors in the South of France on the Exup...but which had hardly worn. It was rock hard, which is why I suspect the tyre that's on the back now.
