Engine was running perfectly, I’ve only stripped the top end due to oil leaks.
Found damage to most of the lobes on the cam. There is no damage to the rest of the cam where it sits in the head and no damage to the rockers. Also found this tiny disk of metal, about 2mm thick by 5mm diameter. Don’t think it’s part of the engine.

There is a company in the States called Murray’s Carbs, they do a twin carb set up with the manifolds. Think they Use Mikuni VM34 carbs.

Before I paint my engine with the Simoniz VHT stuff I was just wondering a few things.
Do I need any kind of etch primer first?
Is the Simoniz paint resistant to petrol, if not can you lacquer over it?
Thanks.

The clamps on my 650 are aluminium, I was hoping to use a set to replace my rusty 550 ones, but they are a bigger diameter.
I wonder if there are an aluminium set off a different model that would fit the 550?

I’ll be doing the top end on my 550 over the winter so I’ll put up the measurements from that one as well.

Gasket was 1.29mm, original bang on 1.2.
Picture is my order from Simply Bearings, they are Nitrile. I went for the stronger shore rating of 90.

5 x 2.5 and they have been perfect. Done about 500 miles and zero leaks.

The rear Motad bracket is made of toffee, my centre stand managed to bend it up in a matter of days causing the stand to rattle against the exhaust. You’ll probably have to fabricate something stronger.

If it’s the seal behind the front sprocket it’s a stepped seal. Only way to replace is to split the cases.
Start with the gear shift shaft seal, that’s a 20 minute job. I found that you can replace without draining the oil if you lean the bike over against a tree or something solid.

A good powder coater wil blast the frame and apply the prime coat on the same day. Leaving a blasted frame overnight is enough time for a light dusting of corrosion to set in. I have always used Microblast Services in Windsor, never had a problem with any of their work and they seal threads etc before powder coating. They blast and powder coat the same day. Turnaround time is two weeks.
How much do they charge to blast and powder coat a frame, looking to get my 550 done soon and they are pretty close to me.

Anyone got one, need more bike storage. Just wondered if you get condensation on the inside because the walls are so thin.

The Shell garage at Cobham services on the M25 close to junction 10 have had a hydrogen fuel pump for a few years now. Never seen anyone use it though.
