i just purchased a center stand for my 1975 cb400f it came with a bolt , spring and a horse show type thing with 2 holes in it i have put the stand on and it goes up and down like it should, but i cant seem to work out what the horse shoe thing is for and i cant see where the spring goes to from the stand to where.

From memory one of the holes in the metal plate is keyhole shaped and fits onto a lug on the frame above the pivot.
The spring fits in the hole on the other end and fits onto a lug on one of the stand legs. I think!
Biffta should be along soon and he should be able to confirm. Dave?

Put the spring on the hook on the stand then attach the curved metal plate onto the spring and attach it to the hook on the frame
