Title: CB450K0 valve stem seals
Post by: royhall on January 13, 2019, 03:35:28 PM
Anyone know if there is an alternative valve stem seal that can be used on the CB450K0 black bomber.

These are only umbrella type seals that don't fit to the valve guide, I have 4 of the later type but they fit to the later type valve guide.

The originals are virtually gone except for CSM who want £72 for 4 little rubber discs. May have to pay that price in the end but that's got to be the biggest rip off price on the build so far.

Pretty sure there must be an alternative from another model. Anybody know. Cheers.

Would it be cheaper to fit the later guides and use the current seals?

Too late Bryan. New guides are already fitted and valve seats redone and new valves lapped in. If only I had realised the difference at the start it would have been a great idea.

When I rebuilt the CL450 engine I had a similar fit of the vapours when I saw the CMS price, but there really was no option I could see.

Hmm can't see any seals in my 1966  450K0 Part Book on Dropbox links on here but 292 seals on K1 parts list on CMS site.

Or am I missing something? What's the P/No Roy ...it would have to be 283 part not 292 for the K0 Bomber (or possibly an earlier model Honda common part)

Update: OK I think I see it now its a cap  14791-283-0xx ... something here about it https://www.hondatwins.net/forums/55-engine-discussion/41984-cb450-valve-guide-cap-replacement.html

Seems Nigel Harris who is a UK guy with a UK K0 Bomber is using 14791-319-005 with success ... I know he totally rebuilt his top enda couple of years ago.

There's a lot of confusion over this Ash. The parts book does not show the seal nor the valve guides. The part I require is 14791-283-010 that goes with the early valve guides. It is an umbrella seal that does not fit below the retaining clamp. There are two different types of valve guide as in the photo.

Mine are the items at the top of the picture and are for engines up to 1011935. The guy in the Hondatwins article has the opposite problem to me in that he has the later valve guides and the early seals. The two valve guides also have the same part number to add to the confusion. I don't think Honda had got it's act together on parts at that point. Davo is probably right, I will just have to pay the price.

There is also a part that I do not know will fit but looks correct 14791-292-000, cmsl say it fits the K0 but after what engine number?

Hmm not sure ...may be worth PM' ing Jensen on here Roy  ...or as you and Dave say just take it on the chin and accept the ripoff price. Guess I have this to come :(

I have put an order in with DSS and ordered some other stuff with them to save the postage. They were a bit cheaper than CMS plus the postage is a lot less. Only problem is all the bits I ordered are 2 weeks special order so it's job stopped yet again. Name of the game with these things as some of these parts sneak up on you even though I thought I had everything bought before I started. The big problem here is the Honda parts book has a great many errors and parts missing. Plus there are many part changes along the way that all have the same part number. Confusing to say the least. I would have been better fitting the easily obtained later valve guides and seals, but I went to a lot of trouble to locate the correct year parts. Down to experience again, my feet are full of bullet holes.
