CB350/400 / Fork lowers original finish?
« on: October 18, 2018, 10:20:46 AM »
Hi - have got the forks in pieces awaiting sending off to hard rechrome. Looking at the lowers as I don't want to embarrass the rest of the bike when it's reassembled. There are a couple previous finishes (or refinishes!) apparent. The top where the boots fit are machined slightly, can see some faint grooves. Bit further down I can see remnants of clear lacquer and the associated rot creep underneath. And a little bit further still there's bare metal polished to some extent. On the back I can see what I can only refer to as 'casting finish' which is slightly stippled and looks like it's the kind of surface I've seen before on newer Hondas I've owned.

So I know I could polish the lowers, but they're quite marked and I don't really fancy putting weeks of work into that. I know it's not going to end up concours spec, I just want it tidy. I am thinking paint, but don't know what was originally put on. Does anyone have any ideas? Paint codes or reasonable colour matches?

ooh ooh if there's loads and loads, I have neither fuel pipe or breather pipes... :)

What is the 5p method?
If you don't have one of these:

bend the spring and insert 5p pieces along both sides as long as you can (and wearing eye protection! as in this pic:

Update.

The bike is the correct way up now! Have fitted the swinger, new set of Hagon shocks, centre and side stands (everyone knows the 5p method here, right?)

... and have assembled both sets of pegs.

In putting it the right way up, I couldn't help but notice the lock on the head tube. I originally planned to just leave this alone but before I fit the rest of it I may as well just put a new one in.

Just awaiting arrival from DSS, then I can do this little lot.

Yep, the shocks on the bike are clearly not designed for the job! They're 315mm eye to eye so god knows what they do fit but I'm busy looking at replacements now. Thinking either DS or Hagon are the only sensible options really.

I've come to refit my shocks on the bike and noticed non-standard bolts. I checked on cmsnl diagrams. I was looking to see how many, and what washers are used - whether they are big enough to cover the entire bushes, or just the centre.

I noticed there are two different types of lower shock mount. I've currently got 'eyelet' shocks and the bolt would go through two bushes side by side. When I get replacements, I'll go for the other type (clevis?) and remove the need for a pair of bushes (and the associated slop I guess!)

Could someone let me know what washers should be fitted to the eyelet style shocks please?

Current status of frame: Nude. In remarkably good nick though, considering the first investigation I made of the indicator bracket that was full of filler!

I have experience on this one, and a particularly stubborn C70 from the same era. Both were victims of extreme swearing.

Interestingly, I took the footrest rubbers off and one of them was completely stuck due to corrosion of the peg beneath. Had to squeeze it out with the vice in the end!

So, update time.

Stand pin removal succeeded after sawing two slots longitudinally inside. Small strip removed, proper walloped it a bit then crushed the sticky out end in a vice.

Pic because great victory.

So I assembled all the bits I want to be blasted and powder coated black. Put some bolts in the threads, added threaded bar with large washers through the head tube to protect the bearing and also the swingarm, as the bushes look pretty good.

So with that lot currently in the van, I'll be turning my attention to the contents of the sump...

Which looks to be a "stopper comp, PV" 24660-377-000. And a bit of follower, perhaps?

CB350/400 / Re: CB400 F Centre Stand Removal
« on: August 28, 2018, 10:31:15 AM »
So, as per my project thread, I've got as far as cutting a slot along the length with a (modified) hacksaw blade, but it's still not moving anywhere. I think I might try and cut another slot a bit further round, to remove a chunk of the tube and get it moving.

Ok, so guess which part has got me stumped...

After this pic:
  • I got the hacksaw out and chopped it off, both ends inside the brackets.
  • Put in the vice, tried to put a hacksaw blade through it and saw along the length. Turns out there's a small seam inside the tube and the blade was too big to fit.
  • Modified the blade, eventually got it all the way through.
  • Chopped carefully for about an hour until I met the metal of the stand itself, along the length.
  • Took bracket outside, made a drift from old bolts and beat it.
  • Bolts went flat and crumbly. Pin still very firmly inside the stand.

Help!

Ok, so having got most of the bits away I can see what I'm dealing with now.

Plan is:
Do a compression test while the engine is in the frame, see how fit it is or isn't
Strip remaining stuff away, get frame blasted, welded if necessary then powder coated
Put existing stuff back on after a clean and refresh
If engine needs a rebuild do that, if it will run put back in

... Ride the bloody thing ...

Go through as necessary making each and everything shiny and right

This way, I won't have to stop and completely strip it all apart again if I do decide to make it concours.

Cool, could you measure them for me please?

Removed all the switchgear last evening and realised the handlebars aren't OE, there are no holes for the cables. Now, I'm not really worried about this from an originality perspective, but I'm curious about the measurements. Could someone with OE bars measure them for me? Width, height and degrees of the bend would be ace, but whatever you can muster? :)
