Thanks Bryanj I think I have it sorted although no test ride yet. I wired the relay to the solenoid and after a little trail and error everything seems ok. I understand your thoughts on the battery, hope it never catches fire ! but a friend gave it me for free and once first started it fires the bike first time all day.

Hi all I have wired the bike from scratch with little knowledge of electrics and an understanding neighbour with good electrical know how. The problem is after 800 plus miles I have burnt out 2 relays. We have a lithium battery and a modern reg/rec fitted and have used a distribution box. The relay is a 30amp. The relay is fitted between the battery and distribution box using a thicker wire and the spade cover on the relay shows signs of getting hot. The second relay i bought had a fuse fitted but didn't blow when the bike died after a 80mile run. Have I wired it correctly ? Should there be a relay on the headlamp?

Thanks Deltarider. My 'bad' one is like the good one in the video with no sign of a spark on my 1 and 4 side.
So Ashimoto leaves me with the dilemma of which make to buy as a replacement. At the minute I have an old one fitted that is battered and dirty and possibly original that seems to be working fine. Looked on line and the prices range from £6 to £16 per condenser, question is does price dictate quality ?

Hi After days of fiddling, my own fault using pod filters I am told, I have finally got my 1976 550 F1 running ok. Upped the main jets to 110 but left the 38 slow jets in after the 40s seemed to make matters worst. Plenty of attempts to balance carbs swop jets around and checking electrics. I did notice a spark at the points gap on 2 and 3 none at 1 and 4. Cleaned and checked gap but still sparking all the way through rev range. I found the old condenser and changed it for the brand new one and although the points are still sparking the performance was immediately improved with he condenser swap. After a quick glance at the internet it seems this is acceptable for the CBs of this era. Should I try to remedy this fault or just enjoy the last bit of riding till the winter months arrive ?

All inline now ! Stripped cleaned, carefully rebuilt and now all 4 needles in a row. If it helps anyone else I think the small springs and "top hats' inside the link holder were stuck or not seated correctly. Anyway onwards and upwards, vac gauges next Thanks Phil

Hi all I have cleaned and rebuilt my carbs and have had the bike running. Because I have pod filters and 4 into 1 exhaust I am about to fit bigger jets but noticed the needles on 2 and 3 carbs are lower down in the carb than 1 and 4 where the main jet sits. Silly question ..... is this right ? I have gapped the slides on the bench, checked the c clips are in the right grooves, and the new needles are the correct length.
Thanks Phil

Snap ! having a new rear tyre fitted on Thursday and due to rust on inside of the rim, I need new wheel rim (£100) spokes (£90) and on closer inspection new lining for the hub (£100) plus £50 for the wheel build. Fortunately Pete at RTT Barnsley can do all these. Don't know if I'am happy or sad ! Good hunting.

Hi all has anyone else had trouble fitting the rear wheel on their 550 F1 ? mine is really tight to fit. I have put in new wheel bearings and double checked they are seated all the way in but still need a pry bar to get the last spacer and chain adjuster to fit.
Thanks Phil
