Hi all and a happy new year
I have just had a quote from Ashford chrome to plate a cb400f2 front mudguard A staggering £600 inc vat Now that would make Jesus shed a tear or two It made me take a sharp intake of breath Replica ones can be had for £174 You don't need to be a genius at maths to work that one out Why is chrome so expensive I was expecting to pay around £100 Can Anybody recommend a reasonable plater please or its the replica route
Cheers Ross

WTF. That is taking the mickey a bit! Definitely there’s cheaper around. Sorry can’t help, it’s about three years since I had stuff done.

Ashford Chroming are just intermediaries. The don't do any Chroming themselves, they sub contract it out to numerous Chroming companies in UK and just act as handing agents and add their massive margin on. In effect, they are just a website and that's all.
Other, cheaper, more reputable companies are available Ross.

Try thisone, did some great work for me.

That's the same company, Ashford Chroming. Wherever you live, if you type in Chroming on tinterweb, it comes up with Ashford Chroming in a town / city near you. They are also in the process of being struck off by companies House, so be careful.
Edit.... I should have said I have no idea why they are ceasing trading or whatever is happening to them.

I used these guys, very knowledgeable and not overly expernsive, the stuff that they did is still good today as it was back in 2007.

The Hull one is Quality Chrome Julie ..I would use Prestige but always typically a 6 month wait. I would estimate 125 to 150 quid either there or in Hull
-
I have always used Prestige plating in Mexborough, absolute top class but as Ash stated it won't be quick but worth the wait 8)
-
I've just had my original chain guard re-chromed by Derby firm. Wait was a couple of months - they advised me that costs had rocketed since I last used them in 2018 - £150 incl Vat. They have done a great job.

I got a quote from Ashford Chroming last year to plate a few parts on my 550 (mudguards, stay and headlamp ears) they quoted £978!!! In the end went with Agbrigg Chroming - https://www.agbriggchrome.co.uk/ (https://www.agbriggchrome.co.uk/) Whilst I certainly would not class their work as 'concours' for £260 I was well pleased. I think in future if I was using them again I would do more of the preparation work myself - thorough cleaning and removal of any small dents/imperfections.
Turn around was pretty quick at about 4/5 weeks and communication was great.

I had my 500K0 stuff ( rear mudguard, rear lamp bracket, fork ears etc.) , done here a couple of years back http://www.marquerestore.co.uk/. Very professional service and pretty fast turnaround (at the time) .. I think they are expensive on wheel rims though, although I just had a bunch of rims done at Prestige and they are £150 each inc. VAT now.
I would avoid Agbrigg on exhausts. ...just saying ;)

Hi Ken
i have used Agbrigg chroming in the past As you say not concourse but ok for the money I suppose back in the day when our bikes were made Honda didn't go to town on chroming either So maybe OK chroming is passable Ross

I used R&S a few years ago and wasn't pleased with the results Dennis. Rear mudguard was in very good nick with minor rust in the side mount to main guard crease area - which I deliberately left for them to remove as part of their process. It came back with the rust still showing and had to treat and silver paint.

That's not good, things must have changed quite a bit, another one crossed off my list.

Interesting this has just come up, I’ve just requested quotes from both R&S and AGBrigg - quote back from AGBrigg almost straight-away just a/w R&S.
Is there a general recommendation though for a decent plater now but not necessarily to concourse standard? Turn around time isn’t critical.
I note the comment about AGBrigg & exhausts - what was the problem there please (pm me if you want) as part of what I need doing is a set of original downpipes

My only recent experience with chroming was with agbrigg and generally was pleased with the results. I found any solid item chromed very well as they had the material to grind and polish. i did find the headlamp ears did distort a bit but bent back into shape easily.

I have found chroming an absolute nightmare recently. My usual plater has been forced to give up chroming due to ever tightening environmental issues connected with the treatment of the water from the various plating baths. As a result of this I called or visited at least half a dozen platers within a 75mile radius of home. I was quoted stupid money and timescales of at least nine months to undertake chrome plating of new parts with nobody wanting to touch old chrome as I was told 'We can pick and choose the work we want to take on and re-chroming of old parts is not economically viable'. With the Triton rebuild I am now swapping out parts that need re-chroming such as handlebars and headlight brackets with stainless polished parts as it's cheaper and less hassle in the long run.
I also need to get the frame of the Rickman CR750 re-nickled and currently looking for a company that can undertake the work due to the frame size, if the price is high I'll look at a suitable powder coat as this type of finish has improved massively over the past five years.
-
Dave, theres an article in Classic Bike this month on a ex Jeffries Rickman Norton that has been restored by Steve Tomkin. He mentions having the frame re-nickled. Might be worth contacting him to see if he can recommend the firm he used. Just googled his firm - heres the link

Thanks Phil, I'll check it out.
I was speaking to a guy at Kempton Park in December and he makes Rickman frames. He told me he uses a place in Southampton, the same place Rickman used back in the day. He couldn't remember the name of the company but I think it may be the same place the BIL used to replate the exhausts for the Kawasaki Z400J. They cost £600 and I wasn't overly impressed with the finish tbh.

Used a company in Birmingham for the chrome on my Suzuki mudguard, rims plus lots of other bits. Looks good and was cheaper than anywhere else I used. May be worth a call
Chromefix is their name

Afraid, that is the current going rate Ross at most of the chomers I have used. Some do deals for cash though... others don't
