Title: bike insurance
Post by: blackeagles on March 08, 2019, 05:25:18 PM
i've had motorcycle insurance for some 15 years since i started riding again but i'm no doubt a bit dim as i was not aware, until recently discussing insurance with a few companies, that if you agree you are going to keep the bike in a locked garage then your not insured when you take it out and, say, park it on the drive whilst you get your gear on or the like.  the insurance only starts when you actually start to 'go for a ride'. my company insuring my motoguzzi actually says not insured within 500 mtrs of my home unless i have started to 'ride'.

it seems most of the companies i was talking to do this (the very few that don't charge three or four times more) and i was told all classic insurance policies do it!

who knew or should i have known!?!

No such BS from Footman James' on my classic bike or car policies - must be garaged (brick built) overnight at the home address and that's about the only stipulation from what I can read.

Worth a call - link: https://www.footmanjames.co.uk/classic-bike-motorcycle-insurance?msclkid=25704489fb1b1f70b33c180b53d9e040&utm_source=bing&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=Bing%20Classic%20Bike%20Insurance&utm_term=footman%20james%20classic%20bike%20insurance&utm_content=Classic%20Bike%20-%20Footman%20James%20-%20Exact (https://www.footmanjames.co.uk/classic-bike-motorcycle-insurance?msclkid=25704489fb1b1f70b33c180b53d9e040&utm_source=bing&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=Bing%20Classic%20Bike%20Insurance&utm_term=footman%20james%20classic%20bike%20insurance&utm_content=Classic%20Bike%20-%20Footman%20James%20-%20Exact)

Yep, I knew this but only after I was reading the 'small print' when I took out a policy about 6 years ago. It was better than what I had before, I had a trade policy which covered road risks only, so being insured whilst parked up in the garage was a big bonus. Some of my policies have theat clause, some don't.

My bikes are the same not covered if parked on the drive or road within the first 500 meters.
My van and car are covered on the drive but not on the road within the first 500 meters. So I never leave them on the road.
Good job too as my brothers car has been whacked twice in the last 6 months as Im at the end of a Cul-de-sac so everything tries to turn around in front of the house.  ::)

I'm hoping when I go to get a quote from Footman James I'll get better than the £1054 pa I'm paying for tpft now. alas, someone just mentioned Garage, I'm not able to say i have one. But an out the way garage is probably more vulnerable around here than my being in a gated community, there are two enty phones to pass, it's under a ceiling, with a cover over it...in a courtyard with almost 30 nosey neighbours who know who owns the bike. When I go out for a late night jaunt I see people coming to their windows ...a thief wouldn't stand a chance of going un-noticed but alas, that didn't count on my last quote. Only three companies on 'Go compare' would have me at all. I live in Shadwell east London.

I hope your getting plenty of miles on your bike to cover that amount of insurance.

Insurance is a minefield of small print.

I pay about £500 a year fully comp on my Hornet, but I don't have a garage. I state it is kept off road...so if I left it outside in the street I could be in trouble...but then again...I never would! I want to move to a place with a garage....for convenience and security. Especially when I get the F2 finished and assembled.

Most policies under those circumstances have a clause about being parked elsewhere after a certain time invalidates your cover...as the vehicle is technically not being 'kept overnight in the garage'. It's all excuses for not paying.

I use my bike as my only form of transport, so it is a really annoying thing to have to be under an insurance 'curfew' but that's the world we live in.

I sure miss the days of the Norwich Union rider policy....as many bikes as I liked up too 600cc, tpfh as a dispatch rider in London all for  a couple of hundreds....we didn't know how good we had it!

i tried them but they were quite high, p james wanted about 140 comp. 10years ncd but a reasonable excess of (i think) 250 and an sp30 with no accidents.  i finally got one from bikesure at 69 (they waived part of their costs) as above but with 50 excess.  if i said ungaraged it was 240! incidently, gocomp cheapest was only 85 (rcib), 87 (bikesure).

at that price someone is taking the piss.  i went to gocomp and said i lived in e12qj with a £3500 bike in a secured parking area (you said locked gates access) with no ncb and only 1 year riding and mce came back at 188 with 50 excess, devitt 442 with another 6 under 500!! i then said no to anything that could give a discount and much to my surprise mce went down to 166??.

of course this is only representative on the day as the quotes don't last more than a few days but it gives an indication.

you need to think about a change at renewal

I took out a policy with Peter James for my CB750 and NTV650 the premium for 2018 was £154, however 2017 was £329, don't know why the sudden drop but I wasn't arguing, both bikes are garaged.

Cheers

I got my 400/4 insured with Lynbrooke for £128 including breakdown cover. No NCD due to not having riden a bike for 20 years. Fully Comp with £50 excess, in a locked garage but only 3,000 miles PA. Lynbrooke were very easy to deal with as well.

Well...it was the cheapest of the three companies on go compare that would have me at all. The AA wouldn't touch me. I've worked in the insurance industy albiet in Life Assurance but i do know I'm in a part of London known to insurers s 'The Bermuda Triangle'....because so much goes missing!!

maybe it would be worth running it throu. gocomp or the like again to see what prices you get quoted now.

if you are only half way into the insurance and given the company prob. charges £50 cancellation but with a new insurance of maybe £200 (asuming your not knee deep in accidents/speeding etc)  then changing would at least give you a reasonable company and you could make yourself £250 without even leaving the house!!

hopefully the 'cheap' one is still available (mce) - bound to be a better one than your current one out there somwhere.

maybe a decent chain and/or some data/marking system to reduce the risk and therefore the cost.

good luck.

Mate of mine had an off on his almost new Harley last August. He’s insured with MCE and he still hasn’t got the bike back even though damage was minimal/easy to repair, when he gets it back he has to pay £1050 excess. So cheap insurance isn’t worth taking in my opinion.Just renewed my insurance with Peter James came down to £385 classic policy with old and modern bikes on,can’t beat that price with companies I’ve tried and I get European breakdown cover too.

Yep I'm with Peter James on almost the same price with a mix of modern and classic, and two registered premises home and lockup. Couldn't find a better deal anywhere else. The cover is very good as well (although so far I haven't had to make a claim).

MCE is who I'm with. The stumbling block seems to be not having a garage...but look how many garages get broken into around here!

Surely there has got to be more to that story than that. What does the insurance company say the delay is for. He must have asked.

My thoughts too but he claims he just gets fobbed off when he rings them,I certainly would have been on to them straight away.Had a car insurance claimed settled within couple of weeks recently.
Peter James Can’t Be beaten for my requirements,I have two garages 20 Miles apart that I use and they’re happy with that.

Essex isn't all that bad then I have 4 bikes on one policy for about that much. I'm with Adrian Flux
I often find phoning around rather then using comparison sites gets a better deal. But it can be quit time consuming

I always used Lynbrookes for about a decade, very nice to deal with. Allowed multi bike, multi rider, was paying £160 or so for 5 bikes with me, the wife, and my dad all able to ride any of the 5 bikes. Sadly I had to pull the bikes all off the road after getting laid off and am still buying kit to keep self employment viable and future proof, but looking like this summer a Bike might be  resurrected and I'll be calling g Lynbrooks first. No cancellation or mid term adjustment fees. Buy back salvage in event of total write off. Ticks all my boxes.  Thankfully not had to claim so no idea how they handle that but informing them of a car accident to keep the paperwork streight they basically said, it's not going to effect the premium so dont worry about it. That quote is based on bike being garaged overnight 'normally' but as a care worker back then it was parked outside work overnight quite often. I think they said it was a case of if the bike was mostly kept in the garage than odd nights away was reasonable. Locks and alarms had to be thatcham approved to be counted as security.

Ok, Ive garages on my side but also age...i think the 400/4 cost me £100 a year. The Tiger 1200 is about 270 from memory and the R1 i really cant remember. We still suffer thefts down in mid-kent because its a world of haves and have-nots.
