Title: No spark
Post by: yozzer74 on April 11, 2020, 08:02:19 PM
Hello been a while I've bought myself a 400/400 needs plenty of work doing to it.engine turns over on start button but it as no spark. I've run a wire from battery to the coils to power them which then gives me a spark all be it a tiny one. Does anyone have any ideas what the problem could be. I've also done a compression test on it I'm getting 100 psi across all 4 cylinder.  My gauge is only a cheap thing off ebay so not too sure how accurate it will be. But should it run with that much compression?? Thanks in advance.

As you never know how accurate the gauge is, so long as they all have about the same pressure it should run fine.

Kill switch or ignition switch could be faulty, clean and reset points and timing. If that really is compression its very low

With that time stood point def need cleaning, setting and timing doing also possible rings are stuck in pistons so be very carefull running it

If he happens to have fitted the kill switch from a 400 twin it would work backwards as the switch is totally different electricaly

Just try for spark in both on and off position.
Mudguard and seat at Silvers but sit down before you check price!

Even with a crap gauge 100psi is way low.

I made that mistake... once.  Afterwards, I modified my compression test gauge to prevent future screw ups...

Hi Yozzer74 welcome to the 400 owners club.
If you are unfamiliar with the 400, then you could do worse than to spend a few hours reading through this forum in particular Nurse Julie's build.
I bought mine in 2016, even if you don't want to return it to prestine condition ( which I didn't) be prepared to spend at least £2k and a lot of time to make it run properly and be reliable and safe, you need to got through the bike  completely.
I replaced the rings and one piston that was damaged ( pays to take the engine apart), it had 33K on the clock and the last Tax disk was 1998. I now get around 120 -125 compression using the same type of compression guage you mention. It will  do 70 no problem up a hill.
I found lots of bodges, in the wiring and fuse box etc.
good luck

Thanks think I'm going to need it. I was thinking of just buying a new wiring harness coils & points and taking it from  there.

Points, possibly complete with plate to get rid of chewed scres yes, coils rarely fail and the loom can be fixed 95% of the time, unless its been hacked about of course.

bryanj to be fair the loom does look in good condition.

what way do you think i should go about this try get it running first or just jump straight in on strip down

Get it running first

I think you are right Yozzer get it to run first see how it runs /sounds. I bought a battery and oil and started it to find smoke and rattles, I'm glad I decided to  strip down because the sump was full of gunge both chains required replacing and the valves required re-grinding, the headstock bearings were notchy, basically all the things you would expect as part of servicing needed checking. The loom should be ok. I replaced the bullets and sockets on the ends of all connectors because i had intermittent issues with the electrics. I removed all bits of wiring that didn't belong ( heated grips etc)

Well managed to get bike to spark tonight. I did compression test again with throttle open .managed together 125 psi average across all 4 cylinders. Going to take carbs off tomorrow see what there like inside. One step closer to trying to start her .
