Lovely run out today and even managed a selfie. And by the way the 1980 jacket still fits? (Too warm for touring jacket)

Okay so how do you shimmy up that mast - looks like its carbon or alloy - no crows nest to take a breather then?

There is something seriously wrong with you Phil.

Ellen MacArthur had to do the same remember? There's lots of ways to do it well.  ;D https://www.yachtingmonthly.com/gear/7-mast-climbing-methods-and-gear-on-test-84008#:~:text=The%20conventional%20mast%20climbing%20method,a%20halyard%20and%20a%20winch.  Have you seen my celebrity snap of her boarding the Cutty Sark?  ;D

That is quite a view! I have absolutely no knowledge regarding sailing! Why would it be necessary to climb to the top of a mast in this day and age. I thought it would all be push button control on a modern yacht?😳😳

Well how about if you let go of a halyard and the weight of the rope on the other side of the pulley pulled it to the top of the mast for instance.
Lots of string up there and some instrument sensors, wind speed, direction, lights etc lots of things to go wrong.

The last time I went up a mast, the main sheet (rope) snagged on the Thames Sailing barge I was crewing on and I was 'nominated' to go up and free it off. That was 80ft up. We were sailing from Maldon to Pin Mill and this barge doesn't have an engine, so it had to be sorted.

This is one from Shotley Marina Julie? I used to sail out of nearby Felixstowe often on a container ship, and also from Parkstone Quay on the boat train to Hook of Holland as a passenger often. It sounds like you showed some girl power lol!  ;D

This is Mirosa, lives at Iron Wharf, Faversham. There is still a big group of Thames barges that sail the east coast, for pleasure these days, not working. I have been involved in some great barge races in the Medway on Barges but also smaller gaff rigged ketches etc. It was in a past life of mine and unfortunately, I don't sail now. Used to own my own yachts in the 80's and 90's but they were all modern and plastic. My house is full of boat pictures 😁😁😁. Luckily, Graham gets sea sick on a Paedlo, so if I ever need to do a bunk in a hurry, I'll be away on a Yacht 😂😂😂😂😂

Just in case anyone is interested there's a young guy who is renovating the 1927 Fastnet winner "Tally Ho". A Gaff Cutter.
Fantastic workmanship and a good film maker to fund it all.
Started 6 years ago and is now nearing completion.

You are hauled up using halyards and winches with jammers closed, but not jammed. A Lot of trust required…

The Duracell Yacht refit is also very interesting, using contemporary construction techniques. The Tally Ho project is outstanding…..the craftsmanship is astounding.

Hope you have a fantastic trip and very glad you've avoided the southern ocean legs. Just too damn dangerous imho but maybe they are staying higher up than in previous races.

Wow, fantastic. In my dreams I'd love to be part of something like that but in reality, there is absolutely no way I have the stamina or energy to be of use to anyone.

Thanks everybody. I’ve made lots of sacrifices for this: bring on the rum and the lash. Incidentally, I’m doing the North Pacific at high latitude…burrrrr.🥶

You'll be on the top of my list Phil.
Yes, the last yacht I bought was birthed in Inverkip. It was the depths of winter, snow everywhere. I wanted to get the boat back to Chichester Marina and was considering taken her up through the Great Glen and sailing all the way down the east / south coast. A fair old voyage. But, luckily a chap had just had a boat brought up by low loader from Sunseeker in Poole and it was going back empty, I gave the driver £500 and he delivered it to Chichester for me 😂😂😂

What a lovely place to start from. I've also sailed around the Whitsunday Islands, that was very special.

Airlie Beach - nice! A friend of ours who used to live over here runs a marina there - it looks amazing from all the piccies I've seen.

My sailing tends to be restricted to small dinghies on the east coast, chilly sometimes..but they are great fun!

Yup, that’s the one. Does your mate know of any cheap digs for three nights…14th to 16th Jan😀.

I took a 2 day dinghy sailing course in Ripon, North Yorkshire, but spent 90% of the time capsized. Dinghy sailing is tougher than it looks, so congratulations to you.

Are you sure you didn't have a dodgy dinghy?  :o  I did such a course with the army sailing association when in Cyprus for six weeks back in 1973, I was a sixteen year old soldier. We did capsize drills, but we had to force the thing to end up on it's side at least. The qualification was called 'C class helmsman' I  think and I got a card to go with it, but I never built on it. Here is a piccie of me doing the canoeing course on the same tour...weren't I cute then?
